Overview
Maryland Transit Administration MTA Police Sergeant (9500) is a promotional-only position open to current qualified MTA Police employees. The Sergeant assists in the development, supervision, education, and direction of subordinate police personnel and reports directly to the Lieutenant. Work is primarily field‑based and involves life‑threatening and hazardous situations.
Qualifications- Education:
Graduation from a standard high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate. - Experience:
Three (3) years as an MTA Police Officer and certification as a Field Training Officer (FTO). - Current MTA Police Corporals receive preference;
Officers with at least three years of service may apply.
- Valid Maryland Motor Vehicle Operator's License.
- Police Officer Certification issued by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission.
- 24‑hour availability for calls.
- Essential Employee status, including agreement to related policies.
- Carry firearms and demonstrate periodic proficiency as required.
- Wear protective clothing such as a ballistic vest.
- Subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with Maryland and federal regulations.
Employees must adhere to all safety rules, policies, and equipment requirements. They are expected to attend safety meetings, identify hazards, report near misses, injuries, and accidents promptly, and refrain from willful violations. Failure to comply may result in discipline, up to termination.
