Job Summary

A Police Cadet receives training in law enforcement practices and procedures. The work of this class involves no supervisory duties or responsibilities.

The role requires no extensive physical exertion. Employees work rotating shifts, including evening, weekend and holiday hours, and perform duties in an office setting.

Selection Process

All candidates indicating the minimum qualifications on their applications will be placed on the eligible list without further examination. The training and experience of each candidate will be evaluated for appropriateness and quantity. Qualified candidates will not be listed in rank order.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Graduate from an accredited high school or hold a GED certificate.

  • Valid Maryland Class C noncommercial driver’s license or an equivalent out‑of‑state driver’s license acceptable to the Office of Risk Management.
  • Or a valid Maryland  an equivalent out‑of‑state government‑issued  to the Office of Risk Management.
  • Must be a United States citizen, or a permanent legal resident who is an honorably discharged veteran or has a pending citizenship application.
  • Must not have more than three points on the driver’s license.
  • Must be at least 18 years old (or 17 years 6 months if under 21 at time of appointment) upon beginning the Cadet Program.
  • Must be able to pass an extensive background check, including fingerprint, federal, state and local investigations, and a physical, agility, polygraph and psychological examination.
  • Must not have any current court orders relating to domestic violence.
  • Must not have a dishonorable discharge from the military.
  • No felony or serious misdemeanor convictions. Misdemeanors must be expunged from the criminal record.
  • Must not have been arrested for DUI within the past five years.
  • Applicants are ineligible if they have illegally used a controlled dangerous substance, narcotic drug or marijuana within the past 12 months.
  • Applicants may be non‑resident of Maryland.
Additional Requirements

Applicants must authorize the release of criminal conviction information, submit to drug testing and complete a financial disclosure pursuant to Sections 7-7, 7-8 and 7-9 of the City Ethics Law.

Police Cadets who successfully complete the program are required to enter the first available entry‑level training class as a Police Officer Trainee at the Professional Development and Training Academy (PDTA) upon reaching 20 years and 6 months of age. Failure to enter the PDTA as a Police Officer Trainee upon reaching this threshold will result in termination of employment with the BPD.

Benefits

Salary: $37,845 annually.

Work is performed in an office. Employees receive close supervision from a technical superior.
