Job Summary:

A Crime Laboratory Assistant documents, monitors and coordinates forensic evidence processes. Work of this class involves no supervisory duties.

Incumbents receive general supervision from a technical forensic superior. Employees in this class work a conventional workweek. Work is performed in an office, laboratory, or crime scene. Work requires minimal physical exertion.

Minimum Qualifications:

On or before the date of filing the application, each candidate must:

Education:

Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a GED certificate.

AND

Experience:

Have three years' experience in office work, including one year experience creating databases or spreadsheets.

OR

Equivalency Notes:
Equivalent combination of education and experience. A bachelor's degree in criminalistics, forensics, chemistry, biology, physics or a related science from an accredited college or university may substitute for the experience requirement.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

* Knowledge of office management practices and procedures.

* Ability to develop databases and spreadsheet reports.

* Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the State's Attorney's Office, Police Department Officials and defense attorneys.

* Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

* Ability to develop and maintain records, files and reporting systems.

* Ability to prepare fiscal and statistical reports.

* Ability to work in a laboratory or at a crime scene

Additional Information

Background Check

Eligible candidates under final consideration for appointment to positions identified as positions of trust will be required to complete authorization for a Criminal Background Check and/or Fingerprint must be successfully completed.

Probation

All persons, including current City employees, selected for this position must complete a mandatory 1-year probation.

Eligibility

Qualified candidates will be considered for vacancies as they arise, for a period of at least six months. The decision of the Director of Human Resources with respect to acceptable minimum qualifications is final.

Education Accreditation

Applicants' education must be obtained from an accredited institution. Education credentials obtained out of the US must be evaluated for US equivalency. Evaluation agencies information may be obtained es.org.
