Position: Registered Dietitian (Student Health & Well-Being Primary Care)

The Student Health & Well-Being (SHWB) Primary Care is seeking a Registered Dietitian (RD) to work collaboratively with a multi-disciplinary team to promote wellness, maintain current health, and/or intervene in acute or chronic illness by providing nutrition counseling and education to support Johns Hopkins learners’ overall health, well-being and quality of life.

The RD provides outpatient dietetic services and recommends appropriate medical nutrition therapy based on the diagnosis and health status of the patient. The RD documents nutritional interventions including plan of care in the electronic health record. The RD conducts programming for staff and learners in collaboration with campus partners.

As the sole clinical dietitian on staff, the RD will create and implement a comprehensive screening and triage protocol to assess patient acuity and need in order to appropriately allocate resources including but not limited to the RD caseload, Health Promotion and Well-Being (HPWB) Coaching, SHWB Groups/Workshops, the Dietitian for JHU Dining Programs, and/or community-based providers. The RD works closely with other SHWB clinical staff, including Nurses, Nurse Practitioners, Primary Care Physicians, Psychiatrists, Psychologists, and Social Workers.

The RD provides consultative services and support to the Athletics and Health Promotion teams.

This position will work across the Homewood, East Baltimore, and Washington D.C. campuses and report directly to the Chief Medical Director for Student Health & Well-Being. The schedule will be 37.5 hours/week, Monday-Friday, typically 8:30 am to 5 pm, however, some flexible scheduling will be required based on clinical needs and programming.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities
  • Conduct comprehensive nutrition assessments, both in-person and by telehealth, for Johns Hopkins learners, taking into account chronic conditions, social determinants of health, and cultural factors.
  • Document all aspects of the nutrition care process for patients in accordance with the departments’ guidelines and standards of practice.
  • Work with diverse patient populations, from those needing therapeutic diets and enteral nutrition to individuals with chronic illnesses, weight management goals, or other specific health needs.
  • Integrate skills and knowledge of pathophysiology, epidemiology, clinical management, cardiometabolic condition, and self-management of the medical condition into clinical practice.
  • Provide evidence-based medical nutrition therapy for acute and chronic illnesses (e.g., diabetes, heart disease, celiac disease, post-surgery recovery, etc.) which includes assessing patient needs, developing personalized nutrition plans, and documenting progress.
  • Provide support for specific needs like managing food allergies, assisting with athletic performance nutrition, and identifying disordered eating patterns.
  • Provide education to patient related to disease, medical therapy, medication management, and healthy lifestyle, including meal planning, physical activity, mental health, and complication prevention and personal monitoring of disease or illness.
  • Monitor patient’s disease status through assessment of data to ensure patient receives safe and timely care in collaboration with the clinical providers.
  • Work as part of a multi-disciplinary health team to support patient wellness and recovery.
  • Develop and review evidence-based educational curriculum for patients and other members of the healthcare team for area of specialization.
  • Assist in the review and/or development of clinical practice guidelines, policies, and procedures for the nutrition management of the patient population and serve as the subject matter expert.
  • Follow national practice guidelines set forth by population specific associations or societies that align with credential specialization.
  • Assist in training dietetic interns in the practice area of medical nutrition therapy.
  • Serve as a core member of the Eating Disorder Collaborative (EDC) team with primary care and mental health services staff.
