Overview
Under direct supervision, prepares selected patients and equipment for physical therapy services, assists in administering treatments, observes patients during treatments, reports status changes to a therapist, and orders department supplies, ensuring sufficient stock.
Responsibilities- Assists with gait and ambulation, functional activities, transfers, routine follow-up of specific exercises, application of hot or cold packs under supervision of a therapist or an Occupational Therapist Assistant (within guidelines of Md. OT or PT Board of Practice).
- Prepping room and setting up equipment; prep of patient room or treatment space in accordance with therapy ready standards.
- Transporting patients to and from treatment areas; encouraging, guiding and helping recurring therapy patients to prepare for therapy session.
- Assists a physical therapist assistant when more than one individual is required to ensure the safety and welfare of the patient during ambulation, transfers, or functional activities.
- Assists with department errands or small projects as assigned; takes patient vitals.
- Assists in maintaining departmental inventories and retrieving supplies for patients as requested in a manner that supports infection control standards.
- Observes and reports any apparent issues or questions patients verbalize about their condition to the therapist.
- HS Diploma or GED
- 3 months healthcare experience preferred
- Knowledge and understanding of standard patient care and health care system policies and procedures
- Skill in demonstrating excellent customer service
- Skill in oral and written communication
- Ability to identify and report changes in patient's condition or equipment malfunctions to supervisor
- Ability to organize and prioritize workload
- Basic skill in computers/Microsoft Office
- Eligible to successfully train in EMR within access granted
- Skills in self time management and organizing workspace
- Basic knowledge of medical terminology and/or anatomy or ability to learn the same
- Eligible to successfully demonstrate use of vital signs devices
- Current BLS CPR certification
- Ability to stand and walk seventy percent (70%) of the time when assisting in patient care activities. Ability to use proper body mechanics to lift, push or pull up to 50 lbs.
- Normal patient care environment with little exposure to excessive noise, dust, and temperatures.
- Current BLS CPR certification

- Performs the following activities without the direct supervision of a therapist, Physical Therapist Assistant, Occupational Therapist Assistant, or other designated provider
- Prep of patient room or treatment space with accordance with therapy ready standards
- Transporting patients to and from treatment areas
- Encouraging, guiding and helping recurring therapy patients to prepare for therapy session
- Assist patients with personal hygiene
- Keeps track of ADL supplies and DME
- Cleans, maintains exercise and DME equipment
- Assist with department errands or small projects as assigned
- Take patient vitals
- Notifying nursing units of inpatient treatment times
- Performs office duties as needed
- Performs and presents needed audits for LMS metrics
- Faxing; copying; printing, scanning
- Assists taking calls from patients, physicians, GBMC staff; monitoring voicemail
- Assists in maintaining departmental inventories, searching for DME equipment throughout hospital
- Retrieves supplies for patient as requested in a manner that supports infection control standards
- Observant to billing standards for supplies
- Reinforcing patient practice of therapist assigned activity, patient transfers, guarding Falls Risk patients when walking
- Being observant and reporting any apparent issues or referring patient to therapist to answer questions patient verbalizes about condition
