Job SummaryA Nutrition Technician monitors the food service activities of residential child day care providers or assesses applicants’ nutritional risk for Federally funded supplemental food programs. Work of this class involves no supervisory duties or responsibilities. Incumbents receive moderate supervision from a technical superior. Employees in this class work a conventional workweek and may be required to work evenings and weekends. Work is performed in clinics or in homes of day care providers where working conditions are normal.
Work requires minimal physical exertion.
On or before the date of filing the application, each candidate must:
- Have an Associate of Applied Science degree in Dietetic Technology approved by the American Dietetic Association.
- OR A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with at least 15 credit hours in foods and nutrition may be substituted for the Associate of Applied Science degree.
- NOTE:
Employees assigned to the WIC Program will be required to pass the State training program for certification as a Competent Professional Authority within nine months of employment.

- Knowledge of the basic principles and techniques of nutrition.
- Knowledge of individual and group behavior.
- Ability to monitor and evaluate food care services of child day care providers.
- Ability to assess nutritional status of children and adults.
- Ability to recommend dietary and lifestyle changes that address nutritional needs of children and adults.
- Ability to review and evaluate food service reports and menus.
- Ability to monitor health-related data.
- Ability to develop and conduct basic nutrition education and promotion programs.
- Ability to prepare nutrition educational and promotional materials.
- Ability to maintain files and case folders legibly and accurately.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
- Ability to prepare narrative and statistical reports.
- Skill in basic nutritional counseling.
- Skill in interviewing.
Eligible candidates under final consideration for appointment to positions identified as positions of trust will be required to complete authorization for a Criminal Background Check and/or Fingerprint must be successfully completed.
ProbationAll persons, including current City employees, selected for this position must complete a mandatory six‑month probation.
EligibilityQualified candidates will be considered for vacancies as they arise, for a period of at least six months. The decision of the Director of Human Resources with respect to acceptable minimum qualifications is final.
