General Description

This is a 12-month position designed for speech‑language pathologists who have completed their clinical fellowship, have a certificate of clinical competency from ASHA, and are eligible for a Maryland state license. The intensive ASHA‑accredited fellowship will allow you to participate in clinical practice with a focus on evaluation and treatment of the ICU patient. The goal of the fellowship is to provide mentorship and advanced practice experience with a complex patient population in the intensive care unit and offer support to work toward completion of the Board Specialty Certification in Swallowing.

This intensive 12‑month program views clinical education as a dynamic process. Advanced fellows learn to apply didactic information to clinical practice with patients who have a wide range of disorders in the acute‑care intensive‑care unit setting with a focus on evaluation and treatment of the ICU patient.

The program is designed to prepare clinicians who demonstrate strengths in the following:

  • The ability to analyze and synthesize information from a broad‑based fund of knowledge in medical communication and swallowing science and disorders.
  • A problem‑solving attitude of inquiry and decision making based on evidence‑based practice.
  • Motivation to achieve an advanced level of clinical competency in prevention, screening, evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of patients with medical communication and swallowing disorders.
  • The ability to communicate effectively and professionally in a multidisciplinary health setting.
  • Self‑evaluation resulting in active steps to develop new skills and acquire knowledge.
  • Ethical, responsible, and professional conduct.
