An Emergency Medical Technician receives academic and field training in providing medical treatment at the scene of an accident or illness, analyzing and taking command of patient care with full responsibility for the patient until transport to a medical facility and relief to proper medical staff. Incumbents receive close supervision from an Advanced Life Support Provider or an Emergency Medical Services Officer and medical direction from an online physician.

Employees in this class work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays. Work is performed at the scene of medical emergencies, major traffic and other accidents, natural and man‑made disasters, where exposure to hazardous situations and emotionally traumatic events occurs. The role requires strenuous physical activity such as lifting, climbing and bending.

• Education:
  
  Graduate from an accredited high school or possess a GED certificate on or before the date of the structured interview.
• Age: 18 years of age or older.
• Citizenship:
  United States Citizen or a Resident Alien at the time of application.
• License:
  Valid Maryland Class C Non‑Commercial driver's license or an equivalent license, and eligible to obtain a Baltimore City driver’s permit.
• Certification:
  Current Basic Life Support Certification as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or equivalent from the National Registry of EMT; or current certification as a Maryland EMT from the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services Systems (MIEMSS).
• Driver’s License:
  Provisional driver’s license or learner permits are not acceptable.

Candidates must pass a physical ability test as required by the City of Baltimore. Employees hired after January 1, 2010, must meet NFPA Standard 1582, including tobacco free upon appointment and throughout their length of service in the Baltimore City Fire Department, or they may be subject to termination. During the initial training period at the Fire Academy, EMTs must obtain and maintain the following:

• Maryland Fire Service Professional Qualification Board Firefighter I certification.
• Maryland Fire Service Professional Qualification Board Responders to Hazardous Material Operations certification.

Candidates who are under final consideration must obtain Maryland licensure as an Emergency Medical Technician from MIEMSS on or before the completion of the Fire Academy. Employment may be terminated if this license is not obtained by the required date. EMTs must also complete an AHA CPR for the Healthcare Provider course, a MFRI Emergency Vehicle Operator Course (EVOC) and Defensive Driving Course or an equivalent course acceptable to the Office of Risk Management and the Maryland Department of Motor Vehicles.

Employees must hold and maintain all listed licenses and certifications as a condition of employment. They must also complete additional educational courses and competency evaluations required by MIEMSS, MFRI and/or the Baltimore City Fire Department. Failure to pass any training modules or to obtain required license or certification by the end of the initial training period will result in termination of employment.
