Location:

Baltimore, Maryland. Pay range: $19-23 for uncertified peers; $23-25 for certified peers.

Employment:
Full-Time, Monday-Friday, 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM.

Baltimore Crisis Response, Inc. (BCRI) is a nationally recognized nonprofit and Baltimore’s only comprehensive crisis response system. Since 1992, we’ve been at the forefront of behavioral health crisis care — providing timely, community-based services for individuals and families experiencing mental health and substance use challenges.

The Opportunity

We are seeking a Peer Support Specialist to work alongside Emergency Medical Services in Baltimore City, providing brief crisis intervention for individuals experiencing substance use issues or overdoses. In this role, you’ll connect people to recovery programs, coordinate care, and offer support for mental health, addiction, and homelessness challenges.

This position is more than crisis response — it’s an opportunity to make a meaningful, life‑changing impact, strengthen community connections, and help individuals move toward recovery and wellness.

What You’ll Do
  • Work collaboratively with EMS and BCRI team members to provide support and resources to individuals experiencing substance use issues or homelessness.
  • Develop a crisis plan with individuals in substance use crisis, provide linkage to care, and introduce crisis planning tools as needed.
  • Respond alongside EMS to overdoses in Baltimore City to provide linkage and connection to services.
  • Assist individuals in crisis with continuity of care by providing mental health, addiction, peer recovery support and other needed resources.
  • Build relationships with addiction, mental health, and homeless outreach providers, peer recovery support, and other community resources.
  • Perform timely and accurate documentation of all clinical and client-related information.
  • Maintain professional, open, effective, and appropriate communication with clients, BCRI staff, management, outside agencies, and the public.
  • Empower participants to become self‑advocates for their own recovery and wellness.
  • Maintain professional boundaries with clients, staff, and other outside agencies.
  • Work with all clients from a strengths‑based perspective, providing support and encouragement as they move forward in recovery.
  • Other duties as required.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
Additional
  • Valid driver’s license.
Physical Demands
  • Moderate walking, standing, climbing stairs, and sitting. Light lifting may be required. Transport of clients and their belongings in agency vehicles. Minimal support and assistance with client care needs.
Working Conditions
  • Works as part of a Mobile Team, providing services in the community. Visit clients in various community settings and on the streets. When in the office, generally works in a well‑lit and ventilated office environment.

  • Potential exposure to highly charged, stressful and emotional situations, potential exposure to aggressive encounters.
