Education

• Completion of Registered Vascular Sonographer accredited program with attainment of RVT
• Associate’s Degree or higher required

• Healthcare Provider (CPR Certification)
• Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT) certification from ARDMS
• Competence in specialty area(s) demonstrated, including sonographer certification by ARDMS, ARRT, or CCI

• Minimum 5 years of vascular experience preferred with proficiency in all aspects of vascular testing
• Experience with vascular laboratory leadership preferred

• Interpersonal skills to interact effectively with patients and families who may be under physical and/or emotional stress
• Communication skills to exchange information professionally with colleagues and ancillary personnel
• Analytical skills to determine the best method of providing requested ultrasound exams based on individual cases
• Ability to detect pathology based on knowledge of physiologic causes and effects of diseases
• Ability to educate rotating ultrasonography students and mentor early‑career staff within the department
• Understanding of ICAVAL protocol and accreditation
• Ability to accrue vascular lab data
• Serve as QI/QA liaison to work closely with Medical Director

• Perform all phases of vascular ultrasound examinations utilizing a high degree of technical aptitude with an in‑depth knowledge of normal anatomy and physiology
• Recognize the significance of all structures visualized and differentiate artifacts from normal or pathological processes
• Perform routine measurements and calculations
• Provide extensive sonography education, training, and experience in specialty area(s)
• Mentor and support staff sonographers
• Commit to professional growth and lifelong learning (e.g., continuing medical education, higher education, research, staff training)

• Prepare exam room and ultrasound equipment in accordance with infectious disease, sterilization, and patient safety protocols, policies, and procedures
• Assume responsibility for the safety of the patient during the sonographic examination
• Review patient medical history and supporting clinical information
• Ensure that the sonographic examination order is complete, contains relevant information, and meets the standard of medical necessity
• Evaluate contraindications, insufficient patient preparation, and patient inability or unwillingness to tolerate the examination and associated procedures
• Communicate with the patient appropriately to facilitate understanding
• Use proper patient positioning tools, devices, equipment adjustment, and ergonomically correct scanning techniques to ensure patient comfort, safety, and prevent compromised data acquisition or musculoskeletal injury
• Conduct patient clinical assessment and perform the diagnostic medical sonography examination ordered by the supervising physician in accordance with professional and facility protocols
• Apply independent, professional, ethical judgment, and critical thinking to safely perform diagnostic sonography procedures
• Apply independent judgment during the sonography examination to ensure that appropriate anatomical, pathological, and clinical conditions are accurately captured in images
• Acquire additional ultrasound imaging as necessary to facilitate optimum diagnostic results for the interpreting physician
• Identify and document any limitations to the sonography examination
• Review examination images, synthesize results, and prepare preliminary findings
• Refer diagnostic, treatment, or prognosis questions to the appropriate physician or healthcare professional unless authorized by written facility policies and procedures
• Maintain patient privacy and confidentiality in accordance with privacy laws (e.g., HIPAA) and facility policies and procedures
• Adhere to accepted professional and ethical standards
• Provide patient services consistent with the Scope of Practice and Clinical Standards for the Diagnostic Sonographer
