The University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) is seeking a leadership role at the Assistant Dean level for Academic Administration and Human Resources. This position reports to the Senior Associate Dean for Finance and Business Affairs and collaborates closely with the Senior Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs and the Senior Associate Dean for Academic Advancement.

The Assistant Dean will be part of the School of Medicine (SOM) leadership team and will oversee the primary functions within the Office of Academic Administration and Human Resources. The incumbent will provide strategic and operational oversight of complex faculty recruitment and appointment, promotion, and tenure review processes. The role requires a thorough understanding of University and School of Medicine policies, bylaws, and procedures, and will spearhead the development of faculty‑related school policy revisions, particularly as accreditation standards evolve.
Responsibilities include serving as the SOM’s primary point of coordination for concerns related to faculty professionalism, resolving faculty conduct issues in collaboration with the Faculty Affairs & Professional Development team, University Counsel, and the SOM Human Resources Office. The role also works closely with the UMSOM Human Resources Office to coordinate on HR functions that impact the SOM. Total staff across functions is 10 and direct reports are 5.

- Develop a detailed understanding of the multifaceted/interrelated missions supported by SOM faculty and staff.

- Serve as a highly credible resource for faculty and administrative leaders in the SOM and the University community.
- Demonstrate fair judgment and recognize potential patterns related to faculty professionalism concerns.

- Provide thoughtful, meaningful verbal and written communications.
- Oversee all faculty recruitment requests in the School of Medicine on behalf of the Dean, including approval processes for all faculty positions, recruitment waivers, and appointment of postdoctoral fellows.
- Provide recommendations for resolving faculty professionalism concerns within SOM/UMB policy, under guidance of Senior Associate Deans and with assistance from UMB Counsel and other relevant institutions.
- Coordinate with University Counsel, the Office of Faculty Affairs & Professional Development, and SOM Human Resources regarding appropriate faculty‑related actions, and collaborate with UMB Office of Compliance & Accountability and the UMB ADA Coordinator.
- Attend regular meetings to provide guidance to the Faculty Affairs and Professional Development office.
- Lead the administrative functions of the Appointment, Promotion and Tenure Committee, including the Post Tenure Review Process.
- Lead the development of updates for SOM policy changes, some of which are approved through SOM leadership and faculty shared governance.
- Draft communications concerning adherence to policy and procedures at the direction of the Dean and Vice Dean.
- Advise departments, chairs, APT partners, administrators, and payroll managers on policy and processes, creatively problem‑solving unique situations.
- Supervise staff in the Office of Academic Administration, responsible for approving all updates to faculty compensation and administrative appointments.
