Overview

Job Summary

This role focuses on creating clear, user-oriented documentation and tutorials that help the global astrophysics community access, understand, and use a large astronomical data archive supporting numerous past, current, and upcoming space science missions. The position offers the opportunity to contribute directly to world-class scientific research by improving how users interact with mission data, tools, and services.

The role involves close collaboration with astronomers, engineers, and software developers to produce high-quality documentation, tutorials, and educational materials. Responsibilities span written documentation, Python-based Jupyter notebooks, workshops, and direct community support, helping users at all experience levels—from beginners to advanced researchers.

Key Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with astronomers and engineers developing software that enables public access to astronomical mission data
  • Create and maintain user-focused documentation and tutorials for missions, data collections, and data search interfaces
  • Partner with software engineers to produce clear, high-quality documentation for data search APIs
  • Organize and maintain user-facing documentation to ensure accurate, accessible onboarding materials
  • Develop and maintain Python-based Jupyter notebooks demonstrating scientific use cases across a range of astrophysical research topics
  • Provide educational and user support through help desk responses, community channels, classes, demos, and video tutorials
  • Assist with planning and delivering workshops and demonstrations in both virtual and in-person settings
Experience,

Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience working with documentation hosted on HTML-based platforms and within Python notebooks
  • Strong ability to collaborate daily with technical and scientific teams
  • Proficiency in Python and experience working in Jupyter Notebooks
  • Educational background in the fundamentals of astronomy
  • Familiarity with astronomical research workflows or metadata systems is a plus
  • Excellent writing and editing skills, with the ability to communicate complex topics clearly to diverse audiences
Education & Experience Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Astronomy, Physics, Computer Science, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience
  • Minimum of 5+ years of experience writing scientific or technical documentation for a professional audience, or equivalent demonstrated expertise
