Position: Research Data Analyst/Programmer (Open Rank: Senior, Lead, Manager)

The University of Maryland School of Medicine, Department of Epidemiology & Public Health is hiring a Research Data Analyst/Programmer in the Division of Maternal and Child Health. Under general supervision, the analyst/programmer will extract and analyze clinical and claims data to support research studies and proposal development for the division and its collaborators. The Department's mission is to advance public health by investigating the causes, treatment, and prevention of human health problems.

The incumbent will work in close collaboration with faculty, staff, postdoctoral fellows, and data analysts/programmers. The ideal candidate will have programming experience in languages such as Python, SQL, or R, along with experience analyzing and working with healthcare data and research.

Responsibilities
  • Query, manage, and extract data from large clinical data repositories; design and develop scalable data architectures and analytic frameworks to support large‑scale data processing and analysis.
  • Ensure analytics infrastructure and related systems meet business requirements and industry best practices by implementing procedures and protocols to monitor, analyze, and validate data integrity.
  • Gather and transform raw data from multiple disparate sources through scripting, API integrations, and SQL queries to prepare data for analysis.
  • Support the development of big data, batch, and real‑time analytical processing solutions using emerging technologies.
  • Identify process workflows and quality assurance/control measures to monitor and manage project schedules, scope, and budgets.
  • Collaborate with other programmers to maintain and manage cohorts, data extraction processes, and related code repositories.
  • Provide subject matter expertise and direction in research designs and management of quantitative and qualitative data.
  • Develop, recommend, modify, and implement policies and procedures and/or methods for research data collection, quality, warehousing, analysis, and reporting.
  • Mentor less experienced team members, develop training, and provide continued guidance.
  • Clean, validate, and analyze research data in order to prepare findings for publications and grant proposals.
  • Design and conduct quantitative research projects, analyze findings, develop conclusions, write reports, prepare presentations, and recommend actions.
  • Utilize expertise in statistical applications such as SPSS, SAS, R, STATA, Excel, supporting all levels of data analysis.
  • Supervise analysts and manage data analytics methodologies, develop work plans, and ensure completion within deadlines.
  • Manage execution of development and implementation of research initiatives; develop strategic partnerships; establish QA systems.
  • Deliver data and insights in reporting formats understandable to all levels; prepare ad‑hoc and standard reports for external reporting.
  • Determine specifications of databases, develop and maintain databases and data systems necessary for analysis and reporting.
  • Analyze large data sets to identify patterns, communicate key trends, and forecast changing conditions.
  • Design suitable methodologies to deliver actionable insights; create and tailor presentations to internal and external audiences.
  • Collaborate with key stakeholders to define research priorities and develop supporting plans.
  • Manage data analytics and data warehousing staff, ensuring professional skill development.
  • Foster a consultant/client environment providing assessment, training, and advisement in research areas.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
