Position: UX Designer - Baltimore City Department of Information Technology

Salary Range: $78,588.00 - $ per year.

Job Summary

The UX/UI Designer supports the Digital Services team by creating simple, intuitive, and accessible digital government services. This role participates in user research, translates insights into digital interactions, and develops design artifacts such as personas, workflows, wireframes, and prototypes. The designer visually designs user interfaces and graphics, collaborates closely with the Lead UX Designer and agency partners, and helps advance human‑centered design practices across City government.

Responsibilities
  • Participate in user research to gather insights that inform design.
  • Translate research insights into digital interactions, personas, workflows, wireframes, and prototypes.
  • Visually design user interfaces and graphics for digital government services.
  • Collaborate closely with the Lead UX Designer and agency partners to advance human‑centered design practices.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Education:

    Bachelor of Science degree.
  • Experience:

    One year of related specialty IT experience (e.g., system engineering, network engineering, information security, application programming, database management, GIS, custom reporting, or cloud‑based software integrations).
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Prior IT work lead experience preferred. Previous IT experience in government preferred.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Ability to work in fast‑paced environments.
  • Experience creating UI mock‑ups or prototypes.
  • Background in service design.
  • Experience collaborating with developers or technical teams.
  • Facilitation of groups.
  • Current or completed BA/MA in UX/UI design, service design, graphic design, I/O psychology, or related field.
  • Advanced technical credentials such as PMP, CISM, or equivalent certifications, with six months of experience or education credits.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Knowledge of microcomputer systems, client/server, and mainframe support.
  • Understanding of systems analysis, computer programming, and IT operations.
  • Awareness of current trends and developments in network‑based communications systems and related protocols.
  • Understanding of relational database structures and experience with database queries and report generation.
  • Ability to install, repair, troubleshoot network programs, hardware, and systems.
  • Cartographic map design skills for accurate presentation of maps.
  • Analytical, logical problem‑solving skills.
  • Effective relationship management with vendors, management, technical coworkers, and system users.
  • Capability to design complex systems consisting of a variety of programs, procedures, and forms.
  • Ability to schedule and perform preventative and corrective maintenance procedures and repairs.
  • Strong technical writing abilities for reports and analyses.
