Position: Coordinator for Interpretation Services

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Provide direct interpreting services support (voice to sign and sign to voice) for Towson University faculty and staff, including ASL interpretation in classrooms, workshops, department, college, and university service and professional meetings, telephone calls, on and off-campus Towson University sponsored events, and other required job-related activities.
  • Coordinate with vendors to schedule/ facilitate communication services e.g. interpreting, transcription, and captioning services for faculty, staff, and visitors for campus events as needed; manage vendor contracts for interpreting, transcription, and captioning services and ensure invoices are paid promptly; track the university interpreting services budget for faculty, staff, and visitor services.
  • Facilitate arranging other communication-related requests, such as assistive learning devices (ALDs).
  • Facilitate effective communication between deaf faculty and program coordinators, directors, chairperson, and university offices and departments; create systems with consultation from deaf faculty to assure communication access needs for and with deaf faculty. Coordinate with deaf faculty in research collaborations, department, college, and university service. Facilitate communication access between deaf faculty and students for advising, and meetings.
  • Collect and report faculty and staff assessment data about interpreting services and make changes as appropriate.
  • Strive to further knowledge and skills through participation in workshops, professional meetings, interaction with professional colleagues, and reading of current literature in the field by virtue of professional membership, certification and ethical practices.

The work hours for this position may include occasional evenings and weekends.

Telework may be available for this position up to two days per week following the completion of 90 days of service in good standing.

Qualifications and Skills

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Five years of interpreting experience
  • RID, NAD IV and above or BEI certification in good standing (please include certification on your application)
  • Adheres to RID’s Code of Professional Conduct
  • Excellent ASL to English and English to ASL interpreting skills
  • Ability to render the message faithfully and accurately with the appropriate register
  • Ability to work effectively with a team interpreter and the Deaf Studies faculty
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience interpreting in higher education settings
  • Experience working with Deaf professionals
