The Office of the Attorney General s seeking applicants for the position of Assistant Attorney General in the Civil Rights Division. In April 2023, the Maryland General Assembly enacted legislation granting the Attorney General authority to investigate and address civil rights violations by non-governmental entities. Under this mandate, the Office may investigate violations of state and federal civil rights laws, as well as infringements of the U.S. and Maryland constitutions.
Areas of focus include discrimination in housing, employment, public accommodations, and contractual rights.
The Division will address systemic civil rights violations involving patterns or practices of discriminatory conduct. When there is reason to believe a violation has occurred, the Attorney General may initiate litigation on behalf of Maryland residents and seek injunctive relief to prevent ongoing discriminatory actions.
Successful candidates will join a team of dedicated attorneys, investigators, and professionals committed to investigating and remedying civil rights violations. The role requires strong litigation, research, and writing skills, with an emphasis on best practices and sound investigative techniques. Responsibilities include conducting legal research and investigations, initiating and maintaining civil actions, negotiating and monitoring settlement agreements, engaging with external stakeholders and partners, and collaborating with other OAG divisions.
Applicants should be comfortable working with diverse communities. Occasional travel throughout Maryland and work outside normal business hours may be required.
Experience: The ideal candidate will have at least five years of experience in investigation, litigation, or appellate practice, along with current or pending admission to the Maryland Bar or the ability to waive in without delay. Candidates may substitute up to three years of related experience in fields such as policy or civil rights work for litigation experience. Preference will be given to applicants with a demonstrated commitment to civil rights and experience developing complex, affirmative investigations or handling complex litigation.
Strong writing skills are essential, including experience researching and drafting briefs, motions, and other in-depth legal documents.
The successful candidate will be eligible for subsidized health benefits (medical, prescription, dental and vision coverage) and life insurance; leave, including annual (vacation), personal, sick, and paid parental leave; and will be eligible for participation in a contributory defined benefit pension plan in which they are vested after ten years. State employees are eligible to participate in two supplemental retirement plans: the 457 Deferred Compensation Plan and the 401(k) Savings and Investment Plan.
