We are seeking an experienced Equipment Maintenance Lead to oversee equipment maintenance operations at our Baltimore terminal and play a key role in supporting safe, reliable, and efficient terminal operations.

In this leadership role, you will lead ILA mechanics, partner with third-party maintenance contractors, and drive the terminal’s equipment maintenance program to maximize equipment reliability, operational efficiency, and overall performance.

This is an excellent opportunity for a maintenance professional to leverage their technical expertise, lead a skilled team, and drive continuous improvement in a dynamic marine terminal environment. The position focuses on team leadership, maintenance planning, and program oversight rather than performing hands-on mechanical repairs.

What do you gain from being a part of our Team?
  • Competitive compensation
  • Benefits and 401(k)
  • Opportunities for career growth and professional development
Responsibilities What your day looks like as an Equipment Maintenance Lead:

Maintenance Program Management
  • Manage preventive maintenance schedules, inspections, service intervals, and repair planning.
  • Track equipment downtime, repair history, maintenance completion, and recurring issues.
  • Set repair priorities based on safety, equipment condition, and terminal operating needs.
  • Maintain accurate equipment service records and maintenance documentation.
Workforce Leadership
  • Manage daily work assignments and priorities for ILA mechanics.
  • Monitor productivity, work quality, task completion, and safe work practices.
  • Promote accountability, teamwork, and clear communication.
Third-Party Vendor Management
  • Coordinate contractors, dealerships, and service providers to ensure timely equipment repairs.
  • Review estimates, invoices, repair quality, costs, and vendor compliance with terminal safety standards.
Safety & Compliance
  • Enforce safety procedures including lockout/tagout, blocking, lifting, rigging, and PPE.
  • Remove unsafe equipment from service until appropriately repaired and released.
  • Support safety inspections, incident investigations, and corrective actions.
Administration & Cost Control
  • Monitor maintenance costs, parts usage, and outside repair expenses.
  • Coordinate parts purchasing, inventory management, and work order verification.
  • Report on maintenance performance and equipment status while supporting budgeting and replacement planning.
Qualifications To succeed as an Equipment Maintenance Lead, you must have:
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in heavy equipment, diesel, industrial or terminal equipment maintenance.
  • Strong understanding of diesel, hydraulic, electrical, and mechanical systems.
  • Experience planning preventive maintenance and coordinating repair priorities.
  • Ability to supervise personnel, manage vendors, computer, and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience in marine terminals, ports, stevedoring, material handling, industrial facilities, or logistics operations.
  • Familiarity with ILA-represented employees, collective bargaining agreements, or other unionized work environments.
  • Experience overseeing maintenance for forklifts, yard tractors, terminal tractors, and other heavy cargo-handling equipment.
  • Experience with maintenance budgets and vendor cost control.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) to access and work at the Terminal.
Work Environment

Be part of the action at our Baltimore terminal, where no two days are the same! Work across our office, maintenance shop, and active terminal operations while supporting the equipment and operations that keep cargo moving. This is an exciting, hands-on environment for someone who enjoys variety, teamwork, and being part of a fast-paced maritime operation. Flexibility may be needed to support vessel schedules and respond to urgent equipment repairs.

Why

Join Our Team?

Join a team that keeps essential maritime operations moving! You’ll have the opportunity to contribute to critical terminal operations, work alongside experienced professionals, and build your skills in a fast-paced, hands-on environment.
