The University of Maryland School of Medicine and the University of Maryland Medical System are seeking an accomplished healthcare leader to serve as Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) for the Department of Pediatrics and Director of Operations for University of Maryland Golisano Children’s Hospital.
Reporting to the Chair of Pediatrics, with a matrixed relationship to the Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of UMMC, this role bridges academic pediatrics and hospital-based children’s services, advancing the University of Maryland’s mission of excellence in pediatric care, research, and education. As a senior leader, the Chief Administrative Officer partners with physician, nursing, and executive leaders to ensure alignment across academic and clinical priorities for a rapidly growing regional pediatric enterprise.
Responsibilities- Academic Department Responsibilities: The CAO translates academic strategy into operational execution and oversees departmental administration, budgeting, and financial performance, while supporting research growth, philanthropy, and market development.
- Clinical Operations Responsibilities: Serving as the senior operational executive for the Children’s Hospital, the CAO is accountable for strategic, operational, and performance goals, leading inpatient, ambulatory, and specialty operations and advancing quality, safety, and family-centered care.
The Department of Pediatrics is a large, multi-divisional academic department with more than 120 faculty across 21 divisions, a $70 million operating budget, nationally recognized research programs, and robust residency and fellowship training programs.
Supported by a transformative $50 million philanthropic gift, University of Maryland Golisano Children’s Hospital is positioned for continued growth as a destination of choice for pediatric care, education, and discovery. The Children’s Hospital operates approximately 90 licensed beds, with specialized services including Maryland’s largest Level IV NICU, pediatric intensive care, oncology, cardiology, transplant services, and a dedicated pediatric emergency department.
QualificationsA bachelor’s degree in business administration, public administration, finance, marketing, accounting, human resources, or a related field is required; a master’s degree is preferred. Candidates should have a minimum of nine years of experience in administrative and financial operations, including at least three years in managed care, medical practice, or a related clinical environment. At least five years of direct supervisory or management experience is required.
Compensationand Benefits
Hiring Range: $250,000 to $298,000, commensurate with education and experience.
