Position Duties

Oversee all full-time administrators and staff of the department and part-time student employees, coaches and instructors for the following programs: fitness, outdoor, aquatics, intramurals and club sports and all recreation facilities. Develop and manage the Department and Fitness and Aquatic Center (FAC) budgets.

Essential Functions
  • Set operational standards for all recreational facilities and programs to ensure operational and financial effectiveness.
  • Evaluate workload, priorities and activity schedules to determine staffing requirements for events, programs and for the FAC.
  • Hire, schedule and evaluate administrator and staff performance, conducting performance appraisals and reviews on a regular schedule and more often when needed.
  • Evaluate daily operational procedures and policies to ensure an efficient, safe and secure environment for those who are eligible to utilize the FAC.
  • Analyze customer complaints, concerns and suggestions. Provide appropriate follow through to ensure highest level quality customer service related to programs, services and facilities maintenance and cleaning.
  • Develop and implement policy and procedures for the FAC including: eligibility for memberships, services, programs, scheduling and staff and student employee policies and procedures (club coaches, instructors, graduate assistants and student employees).
  • Coordinate regular and deferred maintenance of the FAC with Facilities.
  • Establish hours of operation for the Fitness and Aquatic Center. Ensure all operating hours of the FAC are staffed with trained personnel at all times.
  • Participate in professional associations and development activities to remain informed regarding new development in the field.
  • Establish and manage operational budgets for the Department of Recreational Sports and Fitness and Aquatic Center.
  • Identify budget needs to maintain standards in the industry and to ensure shortfalls are forecasted and risk of injury or illness is minimized.
  • Ensure all revenue budget expectations are met annually.
  • Identify capital budget needs through advance planning.
  • Stay abreast of department progress and challenges.
  • Evaluate department risk management policies and procedures on an ongoing basis to ensure compliance with procedures, University expectations and industry standards.
  • Support and implement sustainability efforts to ensure maximum energy savings at the FAC.
  • Develop department goals and objectives consistent with its mission and the mission of the Division of Student Development; initiate changes in order to develop new policies, procedures and/or methods based on interpretation of organization plans and forecasts.
  • Analyze and evaluate ongoing department programs to identify areas where adjustments/improvements or cut backs are needed.
  • Provide advice/consultation to administrators regarding problems; monitor status reports concerning projects assigned to others.
  • Establish internal objectives and implements procedures to meet goals.
  • Assist in setting department short and long-term goals.
  • Evaluate the impact of the Department's programs on student recruitment and retention, and where appropriate, recommend change based on program effectiveness.

  • Knowledge of: relevant equipment, policies, procedures, programs and strategies associated with administering a comprehensive program of recreational activities; current trends in campus recreation programming; meeting quality standards for services and evaluation of customer satisfaction; recreational facility design, maintenance, successful management and operations; budget management; capital budget planning; equipment/supplies purchasing; computers and related software.
  • Administer performance management; ability to make independent judgments and possess strong critical thinking skills, and ability to work appropriately with other departments, executive leadership and other University leaders.
