The Office of the Dean and CEO at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine is seeking an Associate Secretary JHM Board of Trustees & Advisor for Institutional Priorities. The Associate Secretary serves as the principal board affairs liaison for the Johns Hopkins Medicine (JHM) Board of Trustees. Reporting to the Vice President/Chief of Staff in the Office of the Dean and CEO, this position serves as a strategic partner to the Dean/CEO, JHM Board Chair/Co-Chairs, and Vice President/Chief of Staff and provides leadership for board activities, trustee engagement related to JHM, board communications, and board operations.

The Associate Secretary works closely with the Johns Hopkins University (JHU) and Johns Hopkins Health System (JHHS) Board Offices to ensure alignment across the enterprise. This role combines strategic leadership, governance expertise, executive communications, and relationship management to support the Board's oversight of Johns Hopkins Medicine's mission, priorities, and long-term success.

The Johns Hopkins Medicine Board of Trustees serves as the strategic oversight body for the enterprise. The Board works closely with institutional leadership to establish strategic priorities, oversee enterprise planning and performance, ensure organizational sustainability, and advance Johns Hopkins Medicine's position as one of the world’s preeminent academic medical centers.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Serve as the principal advisor on board organizational matters for the JHM Board of Trustees.
  • Partner with the Dean/CEO, Board Chair/Co-Chairs, JHU and JHHS Secretaries, and Vice President/Chief of Staff to develop Board and Committee agendas, identify strategic issues requiring Board engagement, and support effective decision-making.
  • Provide support for the JHU President on JHM Executive Committee meetings.
  • Anticipate emerging issues and opportunities for Board consideration.
  • Monitor and recommend Board best practices and emerging trends affecting board operations.
  • Oversee and be primarily responsible for the development of minutes, committee charters, policies, resolutions, and related board records.
  • With JHU and JHHS Board Offices, coordinate board and committee self-assessments, trustee orientation, and continuing education.
  • Work with JHU and JHHS Board Offices and Development and Alumni Relations on trustee succession planning, as well as with Leadership Fellows on board composition initiatives.
  • Partner and collaborate closely with JHU and JHHS Board Offices to ensure alignment across the Johns Hopkins enterprise.
  • Develop and maintain trusted working relationships with the Chair/Co-Chairs of the JHM Board and other trustees, as well as liaise with institutional leadership, faculty, staff, and external entities related to the work of the JHM Board Office.
  • With support from Executive Speech Writer, prepare talking points and briefing materials, including for the JHM CEO, in advance of Board meetings.

Board Operations & Engagement

  • Provide oversight and strategic direction for Board meetings, events, retreats, orientation programs, and trustee engagement activities.
