Summary

We are seeking a Corrugated Packaging Designer responsible for creating, developing, and refining structural corrugated packaging designs that meet customer requirements, manufacturing capabilities, and industry standards. This role works closely with sales, production, tooling, and customer service teams to deliver accurate layouts, samples, and manufacturing specifications in a fast‑paced environment.

Key Responsibilities

Design and Drafting

  • Design corrugated packaging for all in‑house manufactured products.
  • Create 2D structural drawings using Artios

    CAD based on customer requirements and equipment capabilities.
  • Modify existing designs to improve performance, cost efficiency, and manufacturability.
  • Develop samples and prototypes for customer approval.
  • Coordinate artwork placement with graphic designers and printing plate vendors.

Material and Specification Expertise

  • Apply knowledge of corrugated materials including ECT, Mullen grades, flute types, and board combinations.
  • Determine appropriate board grade based on product protection, shipping requirements, and stacking strength.
  • Prepare detailed manufacturing specifications for production teams.

Production and Tooling Support

  • Collaborate with design, tooling, and production teams to ensure designs run efficiently on flexographic presses, die cutters, and gluers.
  • Troubleshoot structural or fit issues during production runs.
  • Calculate rule length for cutting dies to support accurate cost estimates during quoting.

Tooling Management

  • Track locations of active and backup tooling.
  • Coordinate tooling repairs with vendors, including pickups and returns.
  • Inspect new and repaired tooling to ensure production readiness.
  • Maintain tooling cost records and purge obsolete dies as needed.

Customer and Sales Collaboration

  • Partner with sales representatives to translate customer needs into practical packaging solutions.
  • Participate in customer meetings, presentations, and technical reviews as needed.
  • Develop structural samples for demonstrations and product testing.
  • Utilize packaging performance programs to provide requested technical data to customers.

Documentation and Quality

  • Maintain organized records of design files, revisions, print plates, and board specifications.
  • Ensure compliance with customer, industry, and internal quality standards.
  • Follow established revision control and change management procedures.
Required Qualifications
  • Experience designing corrugated packaging including RSCs, FOLs, die cuts, displays, and inserts.
  • Proficiency in Artios

    CAD or similar structural CAD software.
  • Strong understanding of corrugated materials, flutes, board grades, and stacking performance.
  • Ability to read and create technical drawings and manufacturing blueprints.
  • Strong math skills and spatial reasoning.
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to manage multiple projects.
  • Experience working in a manufacturing or plant environment preferred.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with digital cutting tables such as Kongsberg.
  • Knowledge of flexographic printing processes.
  • Familiarity with packaging performance standards and testing programs.
  • Basic knowledge of Adobe Illustrator for artwork coordination.
Education and Experience
  • Associate degree in Packaging, Engineering, Industrial Design, CAD Drafting, or related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Two or more years of experience in corrugated packaging or a related manufacturing environment.
Work Environment
  • Office and design lab setting with regular interaction on the plant floor.
  • Use of cutting tables, plotters, sample tools, and measuring equipment.
  • Occasional customer site visits may be required.
