Job Title:
SMT Operator
The SMT Operator will support manufacturing and production activities focused on electronic circuit boards and printed circuit board assemblies. This role involves operating surface-mount technology (SMT) equipment, performing detailed electronic and electromechanical assembly, and conducting visual and microscope-based inspection to ensure products meet IPC-A-610 and J-STD-001 quality standards. The ideal candidate works effectively in a fast-paced, clean, and climate-controlled manufacturing environment while collaborating closely with production teams and management.
Responsibilities- Perform SMT operations, including setup, operation, and basic adjustment of SMT and related production equipment for electronic assemblies.
- Assemble and solder electronic circuit boards, including surface mount and through-hole components, in accordance with IPC-A-610 and J-STD-001 standards.
- Handle and assemble printed circuit boards (PCBs) and electronic assemblies in a cleanroom environment, following established procedures and cleanliness requirements.
- Use microscopes and other visual magnification devices to inspect assemblies for defects, alignment, solder quality, and overall workmanship.
- Operate and interpret basic electronic measuring devices to verify functionality and quality of electronic assemblies.
- Operate and interpret basic mechanical measuring devices to confirm physical dimensions and tolerances of components and assemblies.
- Perform detailed inspection of surface-mount technology (SMT) assemblies to ensure compliance with quality and reliability requirements.
- Work in a self-directed manner, managing daily tasks and priorities efficiently in a fast-paced production environment.
- Maintain accurate documentation and records related to assembly, inspection, and production activities using computer-based applications.
- Follow all manufacturing, cleanroom, and safety procedures to protect product integrity and maintain a safe work area.
- Collaborate with other production staff and management to resolve issues, improve processes, and support on-time delivery of products.
- Communicate effectively with team members and supervisors using clear verbal and written communication.
- Support general production and assembly tasks as needed, including electromechanical assembly and production assembly work.
- Contribute to continuous improvement efforts by identifying opportunities to improve quality, efficiency, and workflow.
- 3+ years of experience as an assembler or manufacturing operator working with PCBs, surface mount, through-hole, electronics assembly, or similar manufacturing processes (preferred).
- Working knowledge of IPC-A-610 requirements for the acceptability of electronic assemblies.
- Working knowledge of J-STD-001 requirements for soldered electrical and electronic assemblies.
- Ability to effectively operate visual magnification devices, including microscopes, for detailed inspection.
- Ability to operate and interpret basic electronic measuring devices.
- Ability to operate and interpret basic mechanical measuring devices.
- Acceptable visual acuity and strong eye-hand coordination for fine assembly and inspection work.
- Ability to work in a self-directed manner in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills for effective interaction with staff and management.
- Proficiency in computer-based applications used for production, documentation, and communication.
- Must have, or be able to acquire, operator certification for IPC-A-610.
- Must have, or be able to acquire, operator certification for J-STD-001.
Skills & Qualifications
- Experience with electronic assembly, including SMT soldering, through-hole soldering, and electromechanical assembly.
- Hands-on experience working with printed circuit boards (PCBs) and electronic circuit boards in a production environment.
- Experience performing microscope inspection of electronic assemblies.
- Familiarity with production assembly workflows and inspection practices in electronics manufacturing.
- Comfort working with surface-mount technology and related inspection techniques.
