The University of Maryland Faculty Physicians, Inc. is seeking an Outpatient Nurse Practitioner for the Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Maryland Medical Center.

The Department of Neurosurgery is seeking a dedicated and experienced Nurse Practitioner (NP) to join our Outpatient Neurosurgery team. The NP will play a pivotal role in the preoperative and postoperative management of neurosurgical patients in the outpatient setting, delivering high-quality, patient-centered care, as well as contributing to the success of our clinical programs. This is a full-time, weekday position offering a rewarding opportunity to work alongside renowned neurosurgeons and a multidisciplinary team in a high-acuity medical center.

The NP manages patients across two neurosurgical subspecialties, the Functional Program and the Brain Tumor Program. This includes intracranial pathologies, including brain tumors and other neoplasms, as well as patients undergoing evaluation and treatment for functional neurosurgical disorders (e.g., Parkinson’s disease, essential tremor, epilepsy). Responsibilities will include assessment, coordination of diagnostic workups, perioperative optimization, longitudinal follow-up care, patient and family education, and close collaboration with surgical, oncology, neurology, and allied health teams to ensure continuity and excellence in care.

Additionally, as a key stakeholder in the success of these programs, the Nurse Practitioner collaborates with interdisciplinary team members, supports quality improvement initiatives, and helps drive strategic goals. Responsibilities include coordinating care delivery processes, monitoring performance metrics, fostering team communication, and serving as a key liaison between staff, leadership, and external partners.

Essential Functions Clinical Responsibilities
  • In clinical collaboration with the attending physician, provide day-to-day organizational and clinical direction and leadership of the healthcare team.
  • Perform comprehensive history and physical assessment for patients admitted or scheduled to service or practice setting.
  • Order, obtain, and interpret appropriate diagnostic tests.
  • Establish a medical diagnosis based on history, assessment, and diagnostic findings, with MD collaboration as needed.
  • Design, order, and document appropriate treatment plans and plans of care, including prescriptions of medications based on a comprehensive review of HPI and diagnostic results, with MD collaboration as needed.
  • Initiate protocols and clinical pathways, evaluate the plan of care ensuring timely intervention.
  • Collaborate with attending and residents.
  • Present patients in chart rounds.
Qualifications
  • Current licensure as a Nurse Practitioner in the state of Maryland.
  • Certification as a Nurse Practitioner by an accredited national certifying body (e.g., AANP, ANCC).
  • Minimum of 1–2 years of NP experience preferred; neurosurgery, neurology, or surgical specialty experience is preferred.
  • Strong clinical judgment, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.

Total Rewards
The referenced base salary range represents the low and high end of University of Maryland’s Faculty Physician’s Inc. salary range for this position. Some candidates may not be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. Exact salary will ultimately depend on multiple factors, including the successful candidate's geographic location, skills, work experience, market conditions, internal equity, responsibility factor, span of control, education/training and other qualifications.
