Job Overview
Based at the University of Maryland Medical System, the Surgical Acute Care unit is a 24‑bed post‑surgical unit that serves patients from a variety of surgical services. The facility is Magnet®‑designated and a recognized academic medical center.
Unit Responsibilities- Provide independent, coordinated care to postoperative patients within a clinical specialty.
- Continuously monitor patients (cardiac, oxygen saturation, drains, wounds, etc.).
- Coordinate care from admission via IMC, ICU, PACU, CCRU, or direct admission.
- Serve as a participative member of the multidisciplinary patient‑care service team.
- Lead charge nurse, preceptor, or clinical resource roles and support unit governance.
- Advise on and implement strategies that improve patient outcomes, satisfaction, and cost‑effectiveness.

- Direct admissions through Express Care / Critical Care Resuscitation Unit (CCRU)

- Registered Nurse licensed in Maryland (or eligible via Compact).
- Minimum 12 months of nursing experience; current with mandatory trainings and ongoing education (10 contact hours per year).
- Member of a professional nursing organization.
- Recent clinical experience in a comparable setting.
- Demonstrated leadership experience (charge nurse, preceptor, clinical resource).
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills (verbal, written, patient and family focus).
- Ability to use computer systems for patient information management.
- Knowledge of nursing principles for growth and development across the lifespan.
Located in downtown Baltimore near the Inner Harbor and Camden Yards, the unit offers a vibrant working environment that brings together talent and ideas to enhance patient care and advance nursing science. The role is the minimum level for nurses with more than 12 months’ experience and focuses on competency in skills and knowledge required by the UMMC Professional Nurse Job Charter.
