The Operating Room at the University of Maryland Medical Center’s R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, MD is seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Assistant Nurse Manager to join our fast‑paced, high‑acuity team. Our level 1 PARC Trauma OR has 9 operating rooms with a hybrid OR available offering services such as General Trauma, Orthopaedic Trauma, Neuro, OMFS, ENT, Plastics, Vascular, Soft Tissue, etc.
Candidates must have a minimum of four years’ experience in OR‑based nursing.
Under general administrative direction of the Nurse Manager, the Assistant Nurse Manager is accountable for the delivery of patient care services which supports the strategic plan of the organization and achieves clinical and service quality objectives, in a clinical unit or care delivery site. This role is accountable for the quality of clinical services delivered, for the competency and performance of nursing staff, and for designing and maintaining systems to support multidisciplinary team functioning and continuity of services within a product line, while working in coordination with Nurse Manager.
The Assistant Nurse Manager also serves as a key participant in organizational project teams and work groups at the organizational and unit level.
The ANM is a visible leader who balances operational oversight with direct clinical support, spending approximately 30% of time working on the floor to support staff, manage throughput challenges, and address barriers to care in real time.
Responsibilities- Help manage and evaluate the system of care delivery and clinical services on one or more patient care units to meet clinical and service quality objectives alongside the Nurse Manager.
- Assess requirements for care delivery systems to meet changing patient population requirements, plan strategies and services to meet clinical program objectives, and communicate long‑ and short‑term plans and objectives to staff.
- Ensure excellence of clinical practice and patient care services, including meeting or exceeding customer requirements, improving clinical outcomes, and achieving productivity and expense reduction goals.
- Support unit‑based professional practice partnership(s) designed around the requirements of customers (patient, physicians and payors) and which involve staff in decision making and unit operations.
- Develop effective administrative, coordination and communication systems and ensure effectiveness of unit operations alongside the Nurse Manager.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary team members to assess, redesign and continually improve effectiveness and productivity of clinical programs.
- Assume a leadership role in managing the quality of services provided at the unit level.
- Implement systems to assess and respond to customer perceptions of service, obtain feedback, incorporate requirements into service design and require staff performance meeting those requirements.
- Implement systems to manage and improve the performance of unit level processes and to improve consistency and coordination of cross‑functional processes.
- Teach and coach staff in effective process analysis and improvement techniques and in using data to assess and improve unit performance.
- Provide leadership visibility and presence during non‑traditional shifts, work alongside the manager to maintain employee/supervisor relationships, and assist in balancing time management for the nurse manager.
- Provide on‑site coverage for the Manager when off‑site for any protracted period.
- Manage human and fiscal resources to meet financial goals and achieve identified outcomes.
- Participate in the development, communication, monitoring and management of personnel on the unit.
- Incorporate patient care requirements into the development of unit‑based orientation processes and onboarding plans.
- Coordinate with Nurse Manager to ensure maximal effectiveness and efficiency of staffing plan, including skill mix and scheduling.
