This role represents the foundational nursing position at UMMC for professionals with more than 12 months of clinical experience. The Experienced Nurse in the Med Surge/Telemetry Admission Unit within the Adult Emergency Department (Night Shift) will demonstrate proficiency in the essential skills and knowledge required to deliver high‑quality patient care.
The nurse will independently provide and coordinate comprehensive care to patients within their clinical specialty, managing complex cases with critical thinking and clinical judgment. As a fully integrated member of the multidisciplinary patient care team, this nurse collaborates effectively with physicians, therapists, and other healthcare professionals to optimize patient outcomes. They will exemplify the full spectrum of professional nursing practice, not only through direct patient care but also by participating in the development and implementation of evidence‑based strategies aimed at improving patient outcomes, enhancing satisfaction with services, and promoting cost‑effective care delivery at the unit level.
Accountability is a cornerstone of this role; the nurse is responsible to patients and their families for the quality and safety of care throughout each episode of treatment. Additionally, the nurse is accountable to their peers for fostering a culture of continuous improvement and professional development within the unit. Reporting to the nurse manager, the nurse is responsible for the comprehensive execution of assigned duties, contributing to the overall success and efficiency of the unit’s operations.
WorkExperience
Demonstrated competent evaluation with successful completion of probationary period, ensuring compliance with all mandatory classes and training requirements.
Education and ExperienceLicensure as a Registered Nurse in the state of Maryland is required, or eligibility to practice under the Nurse Licensure Compact agreements as outlined by the Maryland Board of Nursing. Candidates must maintain a minimum of 10 contact hours of continuing education annually to stay current with best practices and regulatory standards. Active membership in a recognized professional nursing organization is preferred to support ongoing professional development and networking.
Recent and relevant clinical experience in a comparable acute care setting, particularly in medical‑surgical, telemetry, or emergency department environments, is essential to ensure readiness for the demands of the role.
Proven leadership capabilities demonstrated through roles such as charge nurse, preceptor, or clinical resource, with a track record of effectively guiding multidisciplinary teams to deliver high‑quality patient care.
Strong collaboration skills to function effectively within diverse healthcare teams, promoting a culture of respect and shared responsibility.
Proficiency in utilizing electronic health record systems and other healthcare technologies to accurately document and manage patient information, ensuring data integrity and confidentiality.
Comprehensive understanding of patient care principles tailored to the specific needs of adult populations served in medical‑surgical, telemetry, and emergency settings.
