Clinical Nurse II (CN II) - Ambulatory ENT Telephone Triage Nurse

The Clinical Nurse II (CN II) - Ambulatory ENT Telephone Triage Nurse provides specialized nursing care and care coordination for otolaryngology (ENT) patients, with a primary focus on post-surgical telephone triage, patient education, symptom assessment, and care management. The CN II serves as a key clinical resource for patients and families, utilizing evidence-based nursing practice to assess patient concerns, prioritize care needs, provide clinical guidance, and facilitate timely interventions.

The CN II independently manages post-operative patient calls, identifies complications requiring escalation, coordinates care across multidisciplinary teams, and supports optimal patient outcomes throughout the surgical recovery process.

The Clinical Nurse II (CN II) role is designed for nurses with greater than 12 months of clinical experience. The CN II maintains practice readiness as defined by UMMS: "The ability to assess and manage each patient's diverse clinical needs while demonstrating the confidence and competence to safely perform and coordinate the interventions needed to provide equitable, comprehensive patient-centered care." Building upon foundational skills, the CN II demonstrates enhanced clinical reasoning, proactive care coordination, and beginning leadership behaviors while providing direct patient care and collaborating with interdisciplinary team members in alignment with UMMS Mission, Vision, and Values.

Experience
  • Conduct comprehensive nursing assessments with enhanced clinical reasoning to evaluate and determine appropriate next steps in the patient's plan of care.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate individualized care plans incorporating patient and family preferences, cultural considerations, and developmental needs.
  • Provide safe, timely, and organized patient care through efficient workflow management and clinical reasoning.
  • Acknowledge and implement provider orders in a timely manner with appropriate evaluation of their relevance to patient condition.
  • Work collaboratively with interdisciplinary team members utilizing appropriate communication modalities and chain of command.
  • Perform effective patient care handoffs and educate patients about treatments using therapeutic communication techniques.
  • Safely administer prescribed medications and monitor for therapeutic effects and adverse reactions.
  • Follows institutional policies, procedures, and best practices for safe medication handling, administration, disposal, and documentation.
  • Implements and maintains a safe, therapeutic care environment by adhering to hospital safety protocols, infection prevention and control standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Identifies and implements timely reporting of incidents or near misses.
  • Demonstrate accountability for professional practice by adhering to regulatory standards, institutional policies, and the ANA Code of Ethics.
  • Engage in continuous learning (5 CEs annually) and professional development to maintain clinical competence.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of regulatory requirements, quality improvement principles, and ability to participate in unit-based initiatives.
  • Mentor and support Clinical Nurse I colleagues in their professional development and competency achievement.
Education & Experience - Require

Licensure as a Registered Nurse in the state of Maryland OR eligibility to practice due to Compact state agreements outlined through the Maryland Board of Nursing required.

Graduation from an accredited nursing program with Associate Degree in Nursing or Bachelor of Science in Nursing.

Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support certification required. Will accept Red Cross BLS upon hire (new hires only).

Specialty life support certification required based on clinical area assignment.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

Demonstrates competence in Levels 1 and 2 of UMMS Nursing Competencies, per standard.

Successfully completes all requirements of member organization/departmental orientation.

Maintains knowledge of nursing principles, practices, and standards of care.

Obtains understanding of anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, pharmacology, and disease processes.

Maintains current knowledge of evidence-based practice, patient safety guidelines, and infection control standards with ability to mentor others.

Maintains knowledge of relevant policies, procedures, regulatory requirements (e.g., HIPAA, Joint Commission), and documentation standards with ability to mentor others.

Achieve and maintain individual competency requirements for nursing practice with ability to mentor others.

Demonstrates physical ability to meet job demands (e.g., lifting, prolonged standing, assisting with patient mobility).
