Specific Duties & Responsibilities- Manage softscape and hardscape for the JHU Homewood campus.
- Inspect SWM areas on campus, keep activity logs, and recommend required services.
- Perform duties as assigned by the grounds manager under the directive of the ground supervisor.
- Plant, remove, mulch, water, weed, and seasonally plant trees, shrubs, and perennial plants on campus.
- Assist the team during snow season by shoveling and clearing snow and ice from walkways, parking lots, steps, and other applicable areas.
- Observe all safety precautions and use equipment and chemical treatments properly to avoid harm to self, others, and property.
- Maintain equipment and work areas in a clean and orderly condition.
- Stand for extended periods, bend, and kneel while planting and digging holes.
- Operate and maintain various mechanical equipment, including trucks, tractors, and specialized garden tools required for botanical specimen maintenance.
- Serve as an institution‑wide resource for increasing the level of excellence in horticulture, landscape maintenance, and planning.
- Assist other team members with a variety of tasks as needed.
- Visit local nurseries, landscape supply houses, chemical supply companies, and equipment vendors to obtain necessary items for the job.
- Assist local community organizations in grounds preservation efforts.
- High school diploma or equivalent (preferred).
- Three years of work experience as a groundskeeper.
- Maryland Pesticide Application License (preferred).
- Valid driver’s license with a good driving record; ability to drive a light truck and RV units.
- Ability to operate equipment such as mowers, trimmers, blowers, small tractors, and other groundskeeping tools.
- Knowledge of proper planting procedures; ability to work outdoors during all four seasons.
- Ability to lift, carry, or otherwise move objects up to 50 lbs (occasionally up to 80 lbs).
- Ability to stand, walk, and move continuously across campus; ability to ascend/descend ladders as required.
- Ability to work overtime when necessary.
- Ability to interact with faculty, students, staff, and visitors respectfully and courteously; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to read, write, and maintain records, work schedules, and work orders.
- Additional education may substitute for required experience, and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond a high school diploma, up to limits set by the JHU equivalency formula.
