Job SummaryA Laboratory Assistant II prepares a variety of samples and specimens for testing, sterilizes equipment, maintains the laboratory in clean condition, and performs routine tests under the supervision of chemists or technologists. The work of this class involves no supervisory duties. Incumbents receive moderate supervision from a technical superior and may work rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays. Work is performed in a laboratory where incumbents may be exposed to heat, infectious diseases, and toxic chemicals.
Physical exertion is minimal, although periods of prolonged walking or standing may occur.

Minimum Qualifications- Education:
Associate of Science in laboratory technology, chemical sciences, or biological sciences from an accredited college. - Or, one year of laboratory work may be substituted for each year of the education requirement.
- Licenses:
Positions in the Department may require a valid Maryland Class C Noncommercial driver’s license or an equivalent out‑of‑state license acceptable to the Office of Risk Management. - NOTE:
Employees who analyze drinking water must successfully complete periodic lab certification performance tests administered by the Maryland State Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.
- Knowledge of laboratory procedures, equipment, and terminology.
- Knowledge of the fundamentals of the metric system.
- Ability to perform routine laboratory tests.
- Ability to clean and sterilize laboratory equipment, instruments, and glassware.
- Ability to follow written instructions.
- Ability to perform mathematical calculations.
- Ability to prepare media and solutions.
Eligible candidates for positions of trust must complete an authorization for a Criminal Background Check and/or a Fingerprint check, which must be successfully completed.
ProbationAll recipients of this position, including current City employees, must complete a mandatory six‑month probation period.
EligibilityQualified candidates will be considered for vacancies as they arise, for a period of at least six months. The decision of the Director of Human Resources regarding acceptable minimum qualifications is final.
Education AccreditationApplicants’ education must be from an accredited institution. Credentials obtained outside the U.S. must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency. Evaluation agencies’ information may be obtained es.org.
