Position: Post-Doctoral Research in Modeling Accretion on to Black Hole Binaries

Overview

Job Summary

This postdoctoral research position focuses on analytical and numerical modeling of accretion processes in supermassive black hole binary systems. The role involves advancing numerical simulations of circumbinary accretion, exploring new physical regimes, and analyzing the resulting orbital evolution and multi-messenger observational signatures in preparation for upcoming astronomical surveys and observatories.

The researcher will work closely with a collaborative team of scientists and will have opportunities to pursue independent research or initiate new projects in related areas. The expected start date is Summer or Fall 2026, with flexibility. The initial appointment is for two years, with the possibility of renewal for a third year based on performance and funding availability.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct analytical and numerical research on accretion in supermassive black hole binary systems
  • Develop and extend numerical models of circumbinary accretion into new physical regimes
  • Analyze orbital evolution and multi-messenger signatures relevant to future observations
  • Collaborate with researchers across theoretical, numerical, and observational astrophysics
  • Contribute to publications and presentations within the scientific community
  • Pursue independent or complementary research projects aligned with the core research goals
Qualifications

Ph.D. in Astronomy, Physics, or a closely related field by the start of the appointment

Expertise or strong interest in one or more of the following areas:

  • Numerical hydrodynamics and high-performance computing
  • Accretion physics
  • Orbital dynamics
  • Black hole astrophysics
  • Radiative transfer
  • Gravitational lensing or general relativity
  • Ability to work independently, learn new techniques, and manage research projects to completion
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and collaboration skills
