Research Technologist; Genetic Medicine

The Department of Genetic Medicine is seeking a Research Technologist who will perform laboratory tasks and complete routine assays following common or established protocols and procedures.

The Research Technologist will be responsible for sample handling, planning and executing molecular genetics tests (i.e., genotyping or sequencing) for complex trait research studies within the Center for Inherited Disease Research (CIDR, cidr.jhmi.edu), a division of Johns Hopkins Genomics (jhgenomics, jhmi.edu). CIDR is a mid-size genome center whose mission, since 1997, has been to support the genetics community by providing high-quality, cutting‑edge genomics services and technologies in order to expand our understanding of disease and catalyze discoveries that translate to patient care.

• Perform clinical and/or research laboratory experiments by following common protocols or with instruction.
• Use basic science knowledge to learn techniques/methods of the lab.
• Gain problem solving skills through progressive training, understanding of the research, and experience.
• Run lab tests and complete measurements.
• Identify and resolve common problems involved in routine assays.
• Increase skill base and knowledge of lab research and relevant assays.
• Train users in standard equipment operation and routine lab techniques and procedures.
• Set‑up experiments based on defined standards.
• Collect project data.
• Prepare, test, and maintain standard laboratory equipment.
• Perform related laboratory maintenance, monitoring inventory of supplies, cleaning equipment.
• Perform quality control checks of data using various software, including, but not limited to, Genome Studio, Spotfire and other in‑house QC metrics reports.
• Prepare and complete both short and long‑read sequencing assays including, but not limited to, Illumina Nova Seq, Oxford Nanopore and Pac Bio chemistries.
• Prepare samples for whole genome sequencing or targeted capture of specific regions of DNA. This includes library preparation and hybrid capture techniques.
• Prepare and complete SNP genotyping assays including, but not limited to, Illumina assays and workflows.
• Routinely utilize robotics and laboratory information management systems to perform laboratory duties.
• Able to work flexible hours beginning as early as 6:00 a.m. and/or ending as late as 6:00 p.m.

• Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field
• Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond a high school diploma/graduation equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

• Basic understanding of molecular biology and genetics.
• Superior organizational skills for time and data management. Ability to function well in a protocol‑driven, team production setting.
