PDR-data visualization - PREP Research Associate
General DescriptionThis position is part of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Professional Research Experience (PREP) program. NIST allows research staff to collaborate with academic institutions on projects of mutual interest, which requires that such institutions receive a PREP award. The PREP program brings together staff from a variety of backgrounds to conduct scientific research across many domains. Employees in this role perform technical work that underpins the scientific research of the collaboration.
ResearchTitle
Dynamic data visualization for tabular data
Work Will EntailThe researcher is responsible for developing a tool to visualize tabular data for datasets published in the NIST Public Data Repository (PDR). The researcher will explore the frictionless data standard, implement this standard for tabular data in PDR, and enhance the current metadata standard (NERDm) to support tabular data as needed. This work can be applied to new datasets generated and published under the Critical Emerging Technologies (CETs) program.
The dynamic visualization will help researchers explore NIST data products in real time, enhancing the user experience of the current PDR.
- Learn and understand the PDR system
- Understand domain‑specific data and metadata standards
- Use and explore AI techniques to support data visualization
- Enhance the existing PDR system with these additions
- Deliver regular code updates and documentation in the code repository
- Attend regular meetings with NIST
- A bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Manufacturing, or a related field
- 2–3 years of relevant experience
- Familiarity with Dev Ops and CI/CD pipelines
- Familiarity with multiple programming and scripting languages
- Ability to develop prototypes of tools
- Strong oral and written communication skills

SalaryRange
The referenced salary range represents the minimum and maximum salaries for this position and is based on Johns Hopkins University’s good faith belief at the time of posting. Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. The actual compensation offered to the selected candidate may vary and will ultimately depend on multiple factors, which may include the successful candidate’s geographic location, skills, work experience, internal equity, market conditions, education/training and other factors, as reasonably determined by the university.
