Job Title

PREP Research Associate (National Institute of Standards and Technology – NIST)

Overview

This position is part of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Professional Research Experience (PREP) program. Employees in this role will perform technical work that supports the scientific research of collaborations between NIST and academic institutions. The focus of this role is to develop AI‑enabled tools to improve data discovery and accessibility.

Research Title

Optimizing NIST AI‑enabled Data Discovery and Accessibility.

Key Responsibilities
  • Learn and understand the Public Data Repository (PDR) system functionality.
  • Determine appropriate AI techniques to improve the search experience.
  • Perform systematic analysis of AI embeddings, MCP and RAG applications.
  • Incorporate optimized AI techniques into the PDR system.
  • Demonstrate search optimization and effectiveness of AI integration.
  • Maintain regular code updates, deliver code repository with documentation.
  • Attend regular meetings with NIST staff.
Qualifications
  • A master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Manufacturing, or a related field.
  • 2–3 years of relevant experience.
  • Familiarity with Dev Ops and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Ability to work with real‑time event data at scale.
  • Familiarity with multiple scripting languages.
  • Ability to develop prototypes of tools.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
