Overview
The Department of Defense (DoD) is offering post‑bachelor's internships at the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Chemical Defense (USAMRICD). As an ORISE participant, you will engage in research projects involving the development and evaluation of medical diagnostics for exposure to toxic chemical agents. Opportunities exist to propose and, with guidance, conduct your own research projects of interest, and attend research conferences.

Start DateUSAMRICD is ready to make appointments immediately; exact start dates will be determined at the time of selection.
Appointment LengthAppointments are initially for one year, with the option to extend for up to four additional years, contingent on project needs and funding availability.
Appointment Provisions- Stipend to be determined by USAMRICD.
- Health Insurance Supplement (Participants are eligible to purchase health insurance through ORISE).

- Training and Travel Allowance.
Engage in the following activities:
- Applying electrochemical methods such as chronoamperometry, cyclic voltammetry, and impedance spectroscopy for development of biosensor-based in vitro diagnostics.
- Testing and evaluating medical device efficacy, including in vitro and in vivo evaluations.
- Synthesizing biopolymers and developing novel colorimetric chemistries.
- Planning and execution of experiments.
- Analyzing experimental results.
- Conducting analytical chemistry and using analytical instrumentation such as liquid and gas chromatography, mass spectrometry, and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy.
- Developing presentations based on experimental data for inclusion in reports and manuscripts for peer‑reviewed publications.
- Bachelor's degree in an eligible chemistry, materials science, or engineering discipline received within five years of the appointment start date.
- U.S. citizenship required.
- Minimum overall GPA of 3.00.
- Eligible disciplines:
Chemistry and Materials Sciences (Analytical Chemistry, Bio‑organic Chemistry, Chemistry (General), Materials Sciences, Polymer Chemistry);
Engineering. - Age of at least 18 years.
- U.S. military veterans honorably discharged or medically discharged with service‑connected disability, degree received within ten years of the desired start date.
- Research experience.
