Research Scientist
PREP Research Associate – CHIPS Funded Project
The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Professional Research Experience Program (PREP) supports a research collaboration with an academic institution to advance nanocalorimetry. This role will support the collaboration’s scientific research by performing technical work in nanocalorimetry sensor design and fabrication.
Research TitleNanocalorimetry Sensor Design and Fabrication
U.S. Citizenship PreferredU.S. citizens are preferred for this position.
Work Will EntailThe Materials Measurement Laboratory seeks a qualified scientist to develop and fabricate new sensor designs for thin‑film material characterization and in‑situ plasma monitoring.
Key Responsibilities- Collaborate with project team members to design nanocalorimetry sensors for multiple applications.
- Use finite‑element analysis to model thermal and mechanical behavior of sensor designs before fabrication.
- Fabricate sensors in the NIST Nanofab.
- Determine sample mass using various techniques prior to thermal analysis.
- Perform nanocalorimetry experiments and analyze data to extract material properties.
- Publish findings in peer‑reviewed journals and present at conferences.
Applicants should possess a background in materials science, physics, or a related field with experience in sensor fabrication, finite‑element modeling, and experimental data analysis. Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and communication skills are required.
