PREP Research Associate – CHIPS Funded Project
Position is part of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Professional Research Experience Program (PREP). The role supports a collaboration’s scientific research for the characterization and modeling of PFAS chemicals to improve detection, replacement in plasma etching, and identify solid adsorbent additives for removal.
Research FocusPostdoctoral associate level researcher experienced in applied mathematics, statistics, or data science will develop mathematical, statistical, and AI/ML algorithms for predicting chemical properties, infrared and mass spectra, and ionization cross sections, incorporating uncertainty quantification. Work will involve interdisciplinary collaboration among chemists, computer scientists, and mathematicians.
Key Responsibilities- Develop novel algorithms for predicting physical and chemical properties, infrared and mass spectra, and ionization cross sections using experimental and computational data.
- Implement and evaluate classification models.
- Assess and quantify uncertainty in predictions and classifications derived from quantum chemistry and physics simulations.
- Conduct computational testing of models for accuracy and uncertainty.
- Develop software (most likely in Python or R) to support the research goals.
- Disseminate results through posters, seminars, and presentations at national and international meetings.
- Ensure proper archival and transmission of results, data, and software through appropriate channels.
- Advanced degree in a scientific, mathematical, or statistical field.
- Familiarity with applied science and numerical modeling.
- Ability to work with a multidisciplinary research team.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
U.S. citizenship is preferred.
