PREP Research Associate – National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)
OverviewThis role is part of the NIST Professional Research Experience Program (PREP). The successful candidate will work with a multidisciplinary team in the Material Measurement Laboratory, contributing to cutting‑edge research on viral measurement tools and reference materials for NIST’s Microbial Measurement Assurance portfolio.
Key Responsibilities- Maintain a portfolio of diverse viruses (up to BSL‑2) through onboarding, culturing and characterization.
- Perform viral and eukaryotic cell culture, plaque assays, optimization, and development of viral culture protocols.
- Consult with stakeholders in the microbiome and pathogen detection communities.
- Maintain accurate and organized electronic records.
- Present results through reports, manuscripts and oral presentations.
- Ph.D. in Molecular Biology, Virology, Microbiology or a related field.
- Minimum of 5 years of relevant laboratory experience.
- Experience measuring cytopathic effect using plaque assays.
- Experience developing viral infectivity assays.
- Experience measuring infectivity of non‑cytopathic viruses.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- U.S. Citizen preferred.
- Salary range is based on Johns Hopkins University estimates and may vary by geographic location, skills, and experience.
