Position: Postdoctoral Fellow (PREP0003981)

Overview

This position is part of the National Institute of Standards (NIST) Professional Research Experience (PREP) program. NIST recognizes that its research staff may wish to collaborate with researchers at academic institutions on specific projects of mutual interest, thus requires that such institutions must be the recipient of a PREP award. Employees in this position will perform technical work that underpins the scientific research of the collaboration.

Title

Protein Engineer, Protein Sequence Function Measurements

Work Description

The candidate will contribute to cutting‑edge research projects aimed at collecting massive protein fitness measurements to develop a new generation of predictive models linking sequence to function.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct innovative research developing large-scale measurements of protein sequence‑function relationships.
  • Design and execute experiments, analyze data, and interpret results.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Provide program management support for multi‑institute collaborations and scheduling automated experiments.
  • Write and publish manuscripts for peer‑reviewed and open‑science mediums.
  • Present findings at conferences and institutional meetings.
Qualifications
  • PhD in Biology, Protein Engineering, Biological Engineering, Chemical Engineering or a related field.
  • Experience working with

    E. coli and skilled in molecular biology techniques.
  • Experience characterizing protein function and/or biophysical properties.
  • Excitement for interdisciplinary field‑building efforts, particularly within data‑driven biology.
  • Ability to travel occasionally for conferences and collaboration.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
