Research Scientist, Research Assistant/Associate
PREP Research Associate
This position is part of the National Institute of Standards (NIST) Professional Research Experience (PREP) program. NIST recognises that its research staff may wish to collaborate with researchers at academic institutions on specific projects of mutual interest; therefore, such institutions must be the recipient of a PREP award. The PREP program requires staff from a wide range of backgrounds to work on scientific research.
Employees in this position will perform technical work that underpins the scientific research of the collaboration.
Postdoctoral Research Associate in Fire Metrology
The National Fire Research Laboratory (NFRL) is the nation's premier laboratory for studying the dynamics of full‑scale structural fires. The candidate will collaborate with researchers to develop and evaluate metrology to accurately measure heat, smoke production, and fire‑related emissions to better predict fire spread and the efficacy of fire safety solutions. The project aims to expand NFRL's measurement capabilities, applying state‑of‑the‑art technologies to improve existing temperature and heat‑transfer measurements and increase the current suite of gaseous emissions measurements, thereby better quantifying heat and mass transfer induced by fire.
Key Responsibilities- Design experiments and conduct data analysis.
- Setup and deploy instrumentation and data acquisition.
- Develop strategies for real‑time gas and smoke analysis.
- Develop strategies for acquiring and analyzing data from thermal sensors.
- Communicate results through presentations, technical reports, and archival journals.
- Ph.D. in Engineering (Mechanical, Aero, Fire Protection, Electrical), Chemistry, Physics, or a related field.
- Hands‑on experience in a research laboratory environment.
- Proficient in coding with MATLAB (or Python) for data analysis.
