Postdoctoral Research Associate – CHIPS Funded Project

This position is part of NIST's Professional Research Experience (PREP) program. NIST partners with academic institutions to foster collaborative research. Employees in this role provide technical support for the collaboration.

Research Title

Thermal 3D Magnetic Imaging of Advanced Semiconductor Packages

Work Overview

Our multidisciplinary team has been awarded funding to apply magnetic particle imaging for remote temperature measurement within packaged semiconductors. The role involves:

  • Developing high-sensitivity magnetic microscopes (≈ 50% of effort)
  • Building user-friendly image-reconstruction software in Python, including machine-learning classification (≈ 50% of effort)
  • Extending current instrumentation and image-reconstruction capabilities for thermal imaging in semiconductor devices
Key Responsibilities
  • Help develop custom-designed magnetic microscopes for thermal imaging
  • Collaborate with team members to thermally image semiconductor test packages
  • Develop user-friendly image-reconstruction software based on existing Python code, including ML classifications of results
  • Help develop software for automated synthesis of magnetic nanoparticle tracers
  • Present results at internal meetings, external stakeholder meetings, and conferences
  • Ensure that results, protocols, software, and documentation are archived and shared with the larger organization
  • Assist in writing journal papers covering project results
Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in physics, physical chemistry, materials science, engineering, or a related field
  • Minimum 3 years of relevant research experience
  • Demonstrated experience with custom electronic, magnetic, or optical instrumentation
  • Experience with data visualization and creating software user interfaces
  • Familiarity with Python, MATLAB, or LabVIEW
  • Familiarity with design tools such as Solid Works or Autodesk Inventor
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
Salary Range

The minimum and maximum salaries for this position are based on Johns Hopkins University's good-faith belief at the time of posting. The actual compensation offered may vary.
