Job Description

Research Scholar Position in Medical Image Processing (Deep Learning for Trauma CT)

The Trauma Radiology AI Lab (TRAIL) in the Department of Radiology & Nuclear Medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine is a collaborative environment focused on cutting-edge imaging research. We develop CADt, CADe, and CADx tools with translational potential for rapid detection, injury grading, and quantitative visualization of hemorrhage burden.

We are recruiting motivated Research Scholars with a master's degree (or equivalent) in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or related fields. Candidates experienced with MICCAI or RSNA CT challenge datasets such as Rib Frac, RSNA pulmonary embolus CT, or RSNA abdominal trauma CT, or proficient with imbalanced cross-sectional imaging data, are especially encouraged to apply.

The postdoctoral researchers will develop algorithms for deployment at the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center and beyond, with opportunities to present, publish, and advance their careers in medical image processing. The work involves an NIH-funded study focusing on:

  • R&D for CT-based tools using CNN or ViT backbones for classification or object detection of hemorrhage-related pathologies, including cavitary hemorrhage, solid organ injury, and bleeding pelvic fractures, utilizing a large in-house CT dataset with high-quality labels and outcome data.
  • Training and validation of segmentation models for multiscale tasks, targeting organ lacerations, cavitary pooled hemorrhage, and active bleeding.
  • An additional position focusing on evaluating user acceptance by collaborating with radiology and trauma surgery experts. This role requires experience in developing web-based interactive user interfaces for the aforementioned tools.
  • Qualifications

The University of Maryland offers competitive salaries and excellent benefits. To apply, please send your curriculum vitae, a cover letter detailing your interest, background, and qualifications, and a list of three references (with contact info) to Dr. David Dreizin .

The position is subject to a background check. We strongly encourage applications from women, minorities, and persons with disabilities. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled. The University of Maryland at Baltimore is committed to diversity and inclusion.
