A Superintendent of Transportation Maintenance oversees the daily operational activities of a highway maintenance yard. Work of this class involves directing the activities of maintenance and repair, equipment operations and office support work units.
Employees in this class work a conventional workweek; evening, weekend, holiday and callback hours may be required. Work is performed in an office where there are no uncomfortable working conditions; however, incumbents are required to be present at construction sites, to make daily checks of work crews' progress and to oversee field operations for weather emergencies where they may encounter construction hazards, moving equipment, traffic and inclement weather.
Work requires minimal physical exertion.
Minimum Qualifications
On or before the date of filing the application, each candidate must:
Education:
Have graduated from an accredited high school or possession of a GED certificate.
And
Experience:
Have five years of experience in highway construction, maintenance and repair work including two years of such supervisory responsibilities as disciplining, evaluating the performance of, and recommending the hiring, firing and promoting of others.
Or Notes Equivalency:
Have an equivalent combination of education and experience. Non-supervisory experience or education may not be substituted for the required supervisory experience.
And Licenses, Registrations and Certificates:
Have a valid Maryland Class C Noncommercial driver's license, or an equivalent out-of-state driver's license acceptable to the Office of Risk Management is required. Provisional driver's licenses or learner permits are not acceptable.

Knowledges, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of the techniques, tools and equipment used in highway maintenance and repair work.
- Knowledge of the surface, sub-surface and base materials used in the repair of roads, streets and highways.
- Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of complex highway construction equipment.
- Ability to plan and schedule the work of others.
- Ability to inspect the work of others to ensure compliance with department standards and enforce safety regulations.
- Ability to maintain records and write reports.
- Ability to read and interpret construction plans, profiles and grade sheets.

Probation
All people, including current City employees, selected for this position must complete a mandatory six-month probation.
Eligibility
Qualified candidates will be considered for vacancies as they arise, for a period of at least six months. The decision of the Director of Human Resources with respect to acceptable minimum qualifications is final.
Education Accreditation
