Job Summary
A Part‑time Security Guard is primarily responsible for maintaining a post to greet and direct visitors and guests of the Baltimore Convention Center to events and area attractions while ensuring the facility is properly secured and that no unauthorized individuals are in restricted areas. Part‑time security guards assist Public Safety Officers with maintaining order, manning posts, and enforcing policies and procedures, both inside and outside of the Convention Center buildings and grounds.
They receive moderate supervision and training to prepare them for a full‑time Public Safety Officer role. Part‑time guards work on an as‑needed basis, must be available to work all shifts, weekends, and holidays, and require moderate exertion with prolonged periods of standing and exposure to inclement weather.
- Greets and directs visitors and guests to events and area attractions.
- Alerts full‑time Public Safety Officers, Supervisors, and/or appropriate authorities when needed.
- Monitors and directs vehicle and pedestrian traffic at loading docks and front drive.
- Assists in monitoring closed circuit surveillance system and indoor alarm panel.
- Provides and controls access to the facility.
- Performs duties as assigned by the Public Safety Supervisor.
- High School Diploma or GED Certificate.
- One year of security or law‑enforcement experience.
- Security Guard card certification preferred.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
- Ability to detect problems and report information to appropriate personnel.
- Ability to work cooperatively and effectively in a service‑oriented environment with frequently changing priorities.
- Ability to walk long distances, remain standing for extended periods, and climb multilevel stairwells.
- Basic computer skills.
- Maryland Driver’s License or valid out‑of‑state license preferred.
- Background check:
Eligible candidates under final consideration must complete an authorized criminal background check and/or fingerprinting. - Probation:
All persons selected for this position must complete a mandatory six‑month probation. - Financial disclosure:
Required to complete a financial disclosure within 30 days of hire, pursuant to the City Ethics Law.
