MTA Special Police Officer, Trainee (8203A)
This entry level position provides unarmed law enforcement support on MTA transit systems, facilities, and other MTA owned properties. Employees are commissioned by the State of Maryland and grant law enforcement authority limited to MTA properties and revenue fleet. The role supports the MTA Police Force per MDOT MTA rules, regulations, policies, governing State and Federal laws, and the Collective Bargaining Agreement with AFSCME Local 1859.
Employees do not supervise but receive supervision from a Police Supervisor or designated official.
- Learn to patrol transit facilities and maintain a visible security presence – conduct routine patrols of stations, platforms, bus loops, rail cars, and MTA properties to deter crime, identify hazards, and maintain a safe environment.
- Learn to monitor, observe, and report safety or security incidents – observe and promptly report criminal activity, threats, disturbances, and hazardous conditions to sworn MTA Police Force Officers or dispatch.
- Learn to operate police equipment such as body worn cameras, handheld devices, portable two-way radio communication systems, fare enforcement tools and electronic fare verification devices, and personal protective equipment (PPE), etc.
- Learn to provide customer assistance and public engagement in accordance with MTA and MTA Police Force standards.
- Learn to conduct fare enforcement support activities – assist with fare checks, monitor fare compliance, report violations to sworn personnel, and observe evasion behaviors.
- Learn to perform other job-related duties as assigned by Management.

EducationGraduation from a standard high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate or a General Education Diploma (GED).
ExperienceNo experience required.
Pre-Employment Requirements- Candidates may be subject to a background investigation under Federal and State laws and regulations. A conviction is not an automatic disqualification to employment. - Employees may be subject to pre-employment drug testing and substance abuse testing per relevant regulations.
- Candidates must pass a physical agility test administered by the MTA Police Force.
- Candidates must possess a motor vehicle license valid in the State of Maryland.
- Candidates must be at least 18 years old.
- Selected candidates must complete training and obtain the Maryland State Police Special Police Officer Certification.
- Employees are deemed essential personnel and may be required to report to work as scheduled during emergencies or adverse weather conditions.
- Employees must complete in-service training.
- Employees may work rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays to maintain continuous security patrol and monitoring across MTA during operational hours.
- The work may be performed outdoors in all weather conditions and includes standing and walking under high-volume traffic, noise, congestion, and possible exposure to dangerous situations.
- Employees are required to possess a valid motor vehicle operator's license.
Employees should adhere to all safety rules, policies, regulations, and personal protective equipment requirements to support a safe and healthy working environment. Employees may attend safety meetings, be aware of hazards in their work area, and must report hazards, unsafe acts, near misses, injuries, and accidents immediately. Employees must refrain from willful violations of safety rules and procedures, reckless and negligent behavior, involvement in criminal activities, and misuse of drugs or alcohol.
Failure to adhere may result in disciplinary action up to and including termination. Employees may only perform work for which they have the appropriate safety training.
