Overview
The Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services (DPSCS) is seeking dedicated candidates to fill a Correctional Officer position.

Baltimore City
- Effectively directs subordinates to ensure safe and efficient operation.
- Conducts searches on inmates.
- Conducts inspections of restraint equipment.
- Make liaison with court clerks, bailiffs, sheriffs.
- Conduct inmate escorts.
- Review and log disposition forms.
- Retrieve and record commitment forms.
- Retrieve and record releases.
- Properly record, call, and verify inmates left out to custody.
- Make timely reports to supervisors.
- Practice weapon security.
- Maintain key security.
- Conduct security counts.
- Inspect personal security equipment and weapons.
- Inspect motor vehicles.
- Properly apply restraint equipment.
- Keep supervisors informed of daily developments.
- Monitor subordinates’ performance and correct deficiencies promptly.
- Plan to ensure efficient operation of details.
- Make liaison with court personnel.
- Have knowledge of MCTU operating procedures.
Howard County/Jessup Region
- Conduct searches of holding cells, bathrooms, inmate access areas.
- Conduct searches on inmates.
- Inspect restraint equipment.
- Make liaison with court clerks, bailiffs, sheriffs.
- Conduct inmate escorts.
- Review and log disposition forms.
- Retrieve and record commitment forms.
- Retrieve and record releases.
- Properly record, call, and verify inmates left out to custody.
- Make timely reports to supervisors.
- Practice weapon security and maintain firearm proficiency.
- Maintain key security.
- Conduct security counts.
- Inspect personal security equipment and weapons.
- Inspect motor vehicles/practice safe driving.
- Properly apply restraint equipment.
- Maintain frequent contact with Transportation Supervisors to ensure efficient operation.
- Education:
High School diploma or high‑school equivalency certificate acceptable. - Experience:
Three years of experience as a Correctional Officer involving the custody and security of adult inmates.
Notes:
- Additional education may substitute for experience: 60 credit hours for one year, with at least 15 credit hours in criminal justice or related social sciences.
- Equivalent state experience in other correctional classifications involving daily inmate contact may also substitute.
- U.S. Armed Forces military service experience in correctional classifications or specialty codes equivalent to a Correctional Officer II may substitute on a year‑for‑year basis.
This position is limited to current employees of the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services (DPSCS).
Licenses, Registrations and Certifications- Employees assigned duties requiring operation of a motor vehicle must possess a valid Maryland motor vehicle operator’s license.
- Employees assigned duties requiring operation of buses for inmate transportation must acquire a valid Class B commercial driver’s license with passenger and air brakes endorsements.
- Must meet selection standards and complete all required training prescribed by the Maryland Correctional Training Commission.
- Must be U.S. citizenship or resident alien, at least 21 years old, pass a background investigation, oral interview, and physical examination.
- Must successfully complete Entrance Level Firearms Training and demonstrate periodic proficiency in firearm safety and care.
- Must provide a telephone number for 24‑hour call‑in duties.
- Must be subject to substance abuse testing according to state regulations.
