Main Purpose of Job

The main purpose of this position is to provide preventative maintenance which includes electrical, plumbing, carpentry, and associated skills, as well as repairing or replacing various items of furniture and equipment necessary to maintain buildings for the comfort and safety of both patients and staff at a large county health department consisting of four buildings, four on-site storage facilities, and twelve satellite facilities.

This position also performs general housekeeping duties such as removal of trash, clean bathrooms, refill toilet paper, soap, seat liners, dust, mop, and vacuum. This position is designated as Emergency Essential Personnel.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

Eighth grade.

Experience:

Three years of experience in any combination of the maintenance trades provided that at least two years of experience are primarily in the trades of electricity, plumbing, steam fittings, refrigeration or air-conditioning.

Notes:

  • Candidates may substitute additional experience in any of the maintenance trades on a year-for-year basis for up to three years of the required education.
  • Candidates may substitute the possession of a degree from an accredited vocational or technical high school with a major in Building Maintenance or a related field for the required experience.
  • Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience as a non-commissioned officer in utilities repair classifications or construction and engineering specialty codes in any combination of maintenance trades, on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

  • Experience performing minor maintenance and repairs on HVAC units, boilers, electrical, and plumbing.
  • Experience with mechanical systems and hand tools.
  • Experience performing minor cleaning duties such as trash removal, vacuuming, mopping, and cleaning bathrooms.
Licenses, Registrations and Certifications

Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.
