Position: Shop Trailer Mechanic II $3000 New Hire Bonus

Job Summary

Cox Fleet is currently hiring a Shop Trailer Technician II. This dedicated on‑site shop position focuses on certified DOT inspections, preventive maintenance inspections, light repairs, and related duties such as aluminum and chem‑lite work, trailer brakes, air lines, auxiliary pumps and engines, liftgates, brake chambers, welding, fabrication, and replacement of panels, body and framework. The Technician will work under supervision of a Sr Shop Trailer Technician or higher, assisting with advanced repairs and continuously developing mechanical skills.

The role requires adherence to all company policies, safety procedures, and high productivity standards. A successful Technician will meet performance metrics and maintain a clean, safe work environment.

Duties
  • Always follows and complies with safe operating practices and procedures.
  • Independently determines parts required for each job and coordinates with the Shop Parts Department.
  • Maintains a clean and safe work environment and assists in cleanup at the end of each day.
  • Assesses customer needs in collaboration with the Service Writer, providing information, resolving issues, and satisfying expectations.
  • Manages concurrent assigned tasks, prioritizing work activities and time allocations.
  • Performs scheduled preventive maintenance (PM), DOT inspections, and follow‑up repairs on light, medium, and heavy‑duty vehicles in a shop environment.
  • Conducts routine maintenance such as oil changes, battery checks, and equipment lubrication.
  • Uses hand tools, precision instruments, trailer tools, welding equipment, lifts, and jacks.
  • Documents work performed, parts used, and findings on Repair Orders (RO) using company‑issued devices and the Karmak application.
  • Accurately completes DOT forms and other required documentation in a timely manner.
  • Communicates with the Shop Manager and support team to obtain approvals on repair estimates, purchase order numbers, and to discuss RO findings.
  • Performs all work in compliance with safety, health, environmental, OSHA, EPA, and DOT regulations.
  • Completes company‑required safety training and maintains shop‑assigned service trucks with safety checks.
  • Performs minor adjustments and repairs on various trailer equipment and systems including aluminum, chem‑lite, brakes, air lines, pumps, engines, liftgates, brake chambers, steering systems, welding, fabrication, and replacement of panels, body, and framework.
  • Diagnoses, adjusts, and repairs trailer equipment and systems, using test instruments such as handheld computers and pressure gauges.
  • Assists Shop Trailer Technician I with diagnostics.
Requirements
  • High School Diploma or GED and at least 3 years’ experience in a related field (or a higher degree/certification with equivalent experience).
  • Possesses and supplies a set of hand tools necessary for the job.
  • Must pass a DOT‑regulated pre‑employment background screening prior to employment.
  • Requires a current and valid DOT medical card with more than four months remaining until expiration, or a DOT physical if less than four months.
  • Must be at least 21 years old and hold a valid driver’s license.
  • Must be a safe driver and pass a pre‑employment drug test (no marijuana testing for this role).
Certifications
  • Required within 18 months: ASE T8 (PMI) certification.
  • Preferred: ASE T4 (Brakes), ASE T5 (Suspension), ASE T6 (Electrical and Electronic Systems), ASE T7 (HVAC), ASE 608/609 (Specialized certification).
  • OEM training and certifications are preferred.

  • Keen knowledge of trailer parts and systems and their maintenance and repair.
  • Ability to lift, bend, climb, stand, and walk for long periods and perform moderately heavy labor.
  • Strong judgment of distances, tool selection, and problem‑solving using logic and reasoning.
  • Effective two‑way communication with individuals and groups.
  • Ability to communicate information succinctly and organized.
  • Self‑directed and dependable with a strong sense of integrity and honesty.
