Position: Facility Maintenance Technician I

Facility Maintenance Technician I (Grade
7)

Job Summary: The Facility Maintenance Technician I (FMT I) is an entry‑level role responsible for maintaining and improving facilities such as bridges, buildings, bulkheads, highways, parking areas, piers, railroads, ramps, roads, taxiways, tunnels, and adjacent areas. Employees use hand tools and operate motorized equipment to perform manual tasks that keep facilities clean and functional. Work may be performed outdoors or indoors, often under all weather conditions, and may involve working at high elevations, in cramped quarters, or moving heavy objects.

Employees operate independently or as part of a crew and provide guidance to other staff, but do not supervise.

Responsibilities
  • Use tools and equipment, and operate motorized machinery to support the upkeep and appearance of MDOT facilities.
  • Work independently or as part of a crew on bridges, buildings, roads, and other infrastructure.
  • Perform tasks that require physical exertion, including moving objects that may exceed 50 pounds.
  • Work at high elevations, in underground tunnels, or in cramped spaces as needed.
  • Maintain continuous and safe operation of facilities, including participation in 24‑hour on‑call duties and rotating shift work (evenings, nights, weekends, holidays).
  • Provide guidance, instruction, and assistance to other employees while remaining unsupervised.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant safety procedures and regulatory requirements.

  • Extreme noise levels and vibration when operating or riding equipment

  • Animals, poisonous insects, and plants
Licensure & Certifications
  • Must possess a valid Class C Motor Vehicle Operator’s License in Maryland with fewer than four (4) points.
  • During the probationary period, must obtain and maintain a valid Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and a U.S. DOT Medical Card (or MVA‑issued waiver) every two years.
Qualifications
  • Education: Completion of the 8th grade.
  • Experience: None.
  • License: Class C motor vehicle operator’s license as described above.
  • Must submit a clear photo of the driver’s license (front and back) and provide the license number, state of issue, and expiration date.
Additional Requirements
  • Ability to perform maintenance on high structures and in cramped quarters such as tunnels and underground areas.
  • Willingness to work day or night hours and to maintain a reliable communication link for 24‑hour on‑call duties.
  • Possibility of exposure to hazardous materials such as asbestos, lead‑based paint, or chromium, requiring periodic medical testing and hazardous materials training.
  • Subject to pre‑employment drug testing and substance abuse testing per MDOT regulations.
