HVAC Maintenance Mechanic

Location: 1800 Orleans Street, Baltimore, MD

Schedule: 3:00 p.m. – 11:30 p.m.

Pay Range: $27–$35 per hour

Responsibilities
  • Make decisions based on trade practices and supervisor direction as appropriate for the scope of this position.
  • Recommend and participate in departmental HVAC operations development, improvement, and implementation as it relates to current and anticipated workload.
  • Identify, analyze, diagnose, and resolve routine HVAC equipment problems and component conditions.
  • Read and interpret schematic and construction drawings, service manuals, and other technical documents.
  • Follow instructions provided by blueprints, drawings, written materials, work orders, and oral instruction.
  • Communicate (written and oral) with supervisor and departmental/JHM staff.
  • Assimilate JHH/departmental mission, policies, and procedures as well as specific job safety aspects.
Working Conditions
  • Work in shop and mechanical area environments with exposure to dust, heat, cold, noise, and fumes.
  • Work may be performed outdoors with exposure to extreme temperatures and other weather conditions.
  • Get into/work within confined spaces and in awkward positions.
  • Work at heights of up to 30 feet above the surface using ladders, lifts, and equipment.
  • Work requires ability to stand, walk, or sit for extended periods of time.
  • Work requires ability to load/unload and transport/position tools, equipment, and materials, and push/pull loaded hand trucks weighing up to 75 pounds.
  • Work with systems that involve risk of exposure to disease.
  • Possible exposure to communicable diseases, hazardous materials, and pharmacological agents has little likelihood of harm when established health precautions are followed.
  • Work requires the use of protective safety devices including, but not limited to, safety glasses, gloves, hearing protection, infection prevention apparel/apparatus, and back belt.
  • Work requires attention to detail, visual acuity, and manual dexterity.
Qualifications
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Successful completion of formal training in the HVAC trade at a vocational or technical school, college, or apprenticeship sponsor organization.
  • Five years of related work experience.
  • Knowledge of HVAC theory, techniques, codes, procedures, and materials.
  • Knowledge of safety rules, procedures, and practices, including the proper use of safety equipment as defined by OSHA and industry standards.
  • Knowledge of sheet metal installation, repairs, and fabrication.
  • Apply HVAC, sheet metal, and safety knowledge indicated herein.
  • Safely use tools and equipment indicated herein.
  • Possess the ability to solve problems and manage information indicated herein.
  • Require proficient written and verbal English communication skills, at least at a high‑school graduate level, to interact with departmental/JHM staff.
  • Identify and avoid hazards as indicated by warning labels, signage, lights, and other warning devices.
  • Perform work within reasonable lengths of time as measured against trade, industry, or engineered standards.
  • Must be able to use all types of tools and equipment normally used in the HVAC trade and sheet metal trade, including specialized equipment such as precision measuring instruments (dial indicators and calipers), powered portable, bench, and hand tools (such as drills, grinders, compressed air), as well as non‑powered hand tools.
