Position: CORRECTIONAL MAINTENANCE OFFICER I Plumbing

Main Purpose of Job

Correctional Maintenance Officer I Plumbing is the entry level of work involving the custody, security and supervision of incarcerated individuals in maintenance and repair work in a correctional environment. Employees in this classification do not supervise other positions.

Position Duties

Status:
No supervisory responsibilities.
Employees receive close supervision from a Correctional Maintenance Officer Supervisor and may be called in during emergencies and staffing shortages.

  • Maintain control and discipline among incarcerated individuals, conduct searches for contraband, administer disciplinary actions.
  • Enforce safety, sanitation, custody and security rules and regulations.
  • Physically restrain incarcerated individuals during fights, riots, or escape attempts as necessary.
  • Assign installation, maintenance or repair tasks to assigned incarcerated workers.
  • Train and instruct incarcerated workers on methods, techniques, use of tools and equipment.
  • Inspect and approve or disapprove work performed for adherence to quality standards.
  • Estimate time, materials and supplies needed for assigned maintenance or repair tasks.
  • Order supplies and materials required.
  • Maintain records of supplies, materials, and inventory of hand tools.
  • Personally perform certain installation, maintenance or repair tasks on plumbing infrastructure.
  • Plan and implement appropriate procedures, operate hand and power tools, maintain records of time, supplies and materials.
  • Escort third‑party vendors and inspect completed work assignments.
  • Perform other related duties as directed.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Education:

    Graduation from an accredited high school or a high‑school equivalency certificate accepted by the Maryland State Board of Education.
  • Experience:

    Two years of plumbing experience.
  • Notes:
    Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience in correctional institutional specialty codes at a rate of two years of military experience for the required experience. The educational requirement is set by the Maryland Correctional Training Commission per Section 8‑209 of the Annexed Code of Maryland.
Licenses, Registrations and Certifications
  • Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator’s license in the State of Maryland is required if duties require operation of a motor vehicle.
  • Complete and successfully pass the Entrance Level Correctional Training Course required for the Maryland Correctional Training Commission certificate during the probationary period.
Special Requirements
  • U.S. citizenship or resident alien status.
  • At least 21 years of age.
  • Completed background investigation.
  • Oral interview.
  • Physical examination.
  • Subject to call‑in 24 hours a day; must provide a reachable telephone number.
  • Subject to substance abuse testing per Code of Maryland Regulations 17.04.09.
Recruitment & Selection Process

Applicants must complete the Entry Level Training Program at the Training Academy through the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission (MPCTC). Upon successful graduation, candidates are assigned to facilities throughout Maryland and remain on the certified eligible list for a period of two years.

Applicants should indicate on their application all counties in Maryland where they are willing to accept employment. The list of Veterans is maintained separately.
